Nai Basti has been grappling with dilapidated lanes and drains: Residents tell Munish Gupta

Jammu, July 13: The residents of Hazi Pura of Nai Basti accused BJP and Congress leaders of running away after winning elections and leaving the civic problems of area unattended. Dilapidated main road, lanes and drains welcome the visitors, residents of the area, which are still awaiting the attention of leaders who got votes by betraying the trust of local people.
Munish Gupta, Editor Early Times today visited Hazi Pura Nai Basi area and met people of all walks of life during his mass contact programme, who would be contesting coming assembly elections which has been slated to be held in end of this year. He projected his vision before the people and appealed them to extend their support by winning him elections. During campaign, he assured all the people that their civic issues will be redressed once he won the elections.
Lanes/ Drains
"The lanes in our Haji Pura area are totally dilapidated which cause accidents.
Big potholes have developed in lanes," said Ashu Gupta, JC Katoch. The grills on drains have not been laid due to which garbage get accumulated in the drains, said Sarla Devi, Durgesh.
Criticising the concerned authority of using substandard material in construction of lanes, Sanjeev Kumar said that the tiles laid on the lanes have gone off and huge potholes have developed. "The road at main entry point of Hazi Pura is in a shambles and has not been repaired and macadamised," said TK Sharma.
"The main drain in the middle of Nai Basti main bazaar road has not been cleaned since long time and dirty water overflows. The situation is getting worse in these rainy season due to which our business suffer a lot," Kunal Sharma.
"Faulty sewerage line is the major problem in this area. The houses here in this area are constructed in small piece of land which have no sceptic tanks and the toilet waste of every house falls into this main sewerage line which doesn't function properly and create huge mess. The foul smell emanates from this sewerage making difficult for us to pass through the road," said Balram Singh.
Expressing his plight, Ashok Kumar said the recently a major drainage system was made beside main National Highway but at one place it has not been covered. Ashwani Kohli, former corporator raised the issue of a small stretch which has not been tiled or macadamised. Nirmala Devi, resident of Hazi Pura H. No 99 said that the drain in front of her house has not been cleaned for the long time and the lane has not been blacktopped. Some people has been creating hurdle but local leaders are not making efforts to solve the issue.
POVERTY
Priya Sharma, whose husband died, last year, has been living in very distressful life with her two children and her mother-in-law Darshna Devi. She has no source of income. Moreover, the house she is living in has developed cracks and need immediate repair. "I am trying to get Widow Pension but nobody is helping me. BPL ration card is not being issued to us," she said.
Honey has kucha house and the roof of which is covered with tin sheets. "I am living my life in difficulty as we have no sustained source of income. My house is in very bad condition which has no permanent roof. During rains the tins on roof leaks. No financial assistance from Government to improve the condition of my house," said Honey.
Street lights/ Drug menace
Ishar Das, an elderly man, raised the issue of absence of street light in the main road to the Hazi Pura. He said that in absence street light, bad elements like drug addicts come to this area during night hours and take drug and liquor in guise of the darkness. Drug menace has been increasing in this area which should be checked.
ERRATIC WATER SUPPLY
The residents are suffering problem due to erratic water supply. "There is no proper timing of water supply. At times supply remains off for days which make our life difficult as water is an essential part of life and without it we can't meet our daily needs," said Kanta Devi further adding that on many occasion the motor of pumping station get out of order and it takes days for its repair.
