BJP should clear stand on observing July 13 as Martyrs' Day | | | Early Times Report Jammu, July 13: There is a widespread resentment against BJP for its failure in getting gazetted holiday on July 13 cancelled. Pertinently the as Sangh Parivar organisations including BJP and VHP had promised to get the holiday cancelled. The people while criticising the BJP for not taking initiative in this regard said on this day in 1931, Maharaja Hari Singh's orders were defied and minorities including Kashmiri Pandits were attacked, their properties looted and houses razed to the ground at some places. The people while taking serious exception to Governmment's failure also questioned declaring July 13 as Martyrs' Day. The BJP when in opposition had launched a campaign against the observance of July 13 as Martyrs' Day and had demanded that public holiday on the date be cancelled. The BJP even up to formation of Government at Centre in 2014 had said that it sticks to its demand but after formation of Government at Centre and in the State it diluted the stand on the demand. Criticising the party and Government, people questioned the State Government for terming July 13 as Martyrs' Day. They accused the party of cheating nationalist forces in the State and urged the party to clear its stand on this controversial issue. Those criticising the BJP's role said if it can't undo the wrongs of previous Government then what is difference between it and those parties who ruled the State. On July 13, 1931a revolt was done against the then Maharaja who was a symbol of nationalism in the State and the secessionist voice was raised since then which was supported even by so-called mainstream parties of Kashmir. |
