Unclean lanes, blocked drains haunt Preet Nagar residents, no respite in sight | | | Early Times Report
JAMMU, July 13: Continuing with his mass contact programme ahead of next Assembly polls, the Editor Early Times, Munish Gupta, who would be an Independent contestant from Gandhi Nagar Assembly constituency, on Saturday conducted an extensive tour Preet Nagar locality and its vicinity. During his mass contact programme, the residents of the area informed Munish Gupta about several day to day problems being faced by them particularly the civic issues being confronted by them. A majority of the residents of Preet Nagar expressed their annoyance against former MLAs alleging that the ex-legislators after getting elected never visited their locality to take stock of their problems. The residents in particular were a little bit harsher towards ex-BJP MLA from Gandhi Nagar, Kavinder Gupta, who according to locals was remained mostly inaccessible during his tenure as a legislator. Expressing his dismay, a resident of Street No 8, Preet Nagar, Amit Sharma said that trash lay scattered in lanes while the drains are choked with waste adding that the condition of lanes is in shambles besides the problem of waste dumping in vacant plots is also there in their area, however, the former MLA and ex-Dy CM Kavinder Gupta never bothered to readdress all these issues. "We never saw Kavinder Gupta after he got elected as MLA from Gandhi Nagar Assembly segment. Kavinder Gupta gave us a lot of assurances during the last assembly polls but after winning he was hardly visible on ground. BJP befooled the people as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in our locality is a big-big zero," said Amit Sharma. Another resident, Ravinder Singh while speaking to Munish Gupta said that waste dumping in large quantities in a vacant plot adjacent to his house is a big source of nuisance for all the inhabitants residing in the vicinity as stench emanating from the site is unbearable. Singh also drew Munish's attention towards the provision of financial aid worth Rs 50,000 to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families to solemnize the marriage of their daughters adding that the government should extend such benefits to the deserving cases without any favour or partiality. "There are three BPL families whose daughters are going to marry in the next 2 to 3 months. I along with few others in the locality are trying hard to get their cases sanctioned, however, I want to convey it through your medium to the authorities to expedite the process of giving much needed nod to the aid," Ravinder Singh told Munish Gupta. Harbans Kour of Street No 1, Preet Nagar, also raised the problem of unhygienic conditions in the area besides dilapidated condition of lanes and by-lanes and blocked drains. While Harbans Kour, Balvinder Kour, Usha Sharma, Jai Kour and Jaspinder Singh were quite vocal in expressing their resentment over the pathetic condition of their locality. "Broken lanes and drains should be repaired at the earliest. The authorities concerned hardly pay any attention towards the upkeep of streets and drains but they were never taken to task by the successive legislators and governments," said Harbans Kour, Balvinder Kour and Usha Sharma. While Jai Kour said, "Thick weeds have grown in a nearby vacant plot which is a breeding ground for mosquitoes and other insects while garbage dumping in it emanates stinking making life of the residents as hell. We shell out money from our pockets to ensure whatever cleanliness we could have in the locality." "Drain adjacent to my house is completely defunct as a thick layer of soil has covered it but no one bothers to clear it despite making number of pleas," said Jaspinder Singh adding that non-provision of street lights in the lanes is another major concern for the inhabitants which needs to be addressed. One of the residents Satnam Singh also raised the issue of street lights and their non-functionality. "My lane has two street lights; however, both of them are out of order for quite some time. Surprisingly, they were installed only a few months back and despite their repair twice they again become non-functional," Satnam Singh said. Several inhabitants also highlighted the problem of lack of public transportation in Preet Nagar and adjoin areas adding that due to non-availability of transport facility the residents particularly old aged, women and children are facing lot of troubles to and fro reaching their destinations. "Lack of public transport facility in the area is a major issue confronting the residents. In the absence of mini buses we are solely dependent on auto-rickshaws which are quite expensive as a regular mode of transport," said Jagjeet Singh.
