Obsolete electric wires, mighty nallah pose threat to Rajiv Nagar residents | Munish Gupta's Mass Contact Programme continues | | Early Times Report JAMMU, July 29: As a part of his ongoing mass contact programme, Editor Early Times, Munish Gupta who would be contesting upcoming assembly election from Gandhi Nagar Assembly Constituency as an independent candidate, on Monday conducted second leg of his visit to Rajiv Nagar Colony adjoining Qasim Nagar and Narwal Bala areas on city outskirts. While interacting with the residents of Rajiv Nagar, Munish Gupta patiently listened to their various grievances and assured the locals that he would leave no stone unturned in solving their problems if he gets elected as MLA from Gandhi Nagar constituency. The residents of the area while greeting Munish Gupta with loud cheers and open arms told him that they see a ray of hope in his endeavour to contest as an independent candidate from Gandhi Nagar as his approach of personally meeting with all sections of the society has never seen or heard before in their lifetime adding that those represented the constituency so far remained aloof and inaccessible to the public. Explaining their various problems, a large number of inhabitants of the area told Munish that despite more than a three decade old locality, Rajiv Nagar remained at the receiving end as far as the real development is concerned. "The obsolete electric cables that hang low from various poles in the area are one of the main causes of concern for the residents. If the old wiring is not replaced at the earliest, it may result in a major catastrophe as it pose threat to lives of the inhabitants particularly children. We made repeated requests to the PDD authorities to take the corrective measures but to no avail," said Vinod Kumar adding that the leaders of all political parties visit the area only to seek our votes but do nothing in return. "Look at the pathetic condition of lanes in the area while the drains are no better either as they are full of dirt and garbage due to which an epidemic can outbreak any time," he further said. Ghulam Ahmad Bhat and Gurdayal, residents of the area, said that a nallah in the vicinity is a big nuisance for the inhabitants adding that it is like a death trap for them as it swells to dangerous proportions in monsoon. "The cracks have developed on the embankments and edge walls as the large size boulders hit that portion of the concrete layer as and when it gets flooded with water. The gushing water could breach the edges any time. It needs to be repaired at the earliest. While a vast portion of the nallah is choked with garbage and debris due to which there is always a threat of flash flood in rainy season. Moreover, foul smell also emanates from the nallah which is unbearable for the residents," said Bhat and Gurdayal adding that removal of garbage from the nallah flowing in the area is quite essential to maintain cleanliness but all our requests in this regard have fallen on "The tendering of work on connecting Rajiv Nagar tail end with Qasim Nagar has already been done but the construction is yet to take place. We made a number of requests to the authorities concerned to take up the work at the earliest but all our pleas were ignored so far," said Ashok Kumar Vaid. eaf ears. Rani Sharma said that she is waiting for the financial aid for the construction of her house which fell due to heavy rainfall adding that she had also applied for the old pension but till date she hasn't received any intimation regarding my enrolment in the list of beneficiaries for the scheme. While Kamal and Ashok Kumar Vaid highlighted the issue of providing a thoroughfare to their street from Narwal bridge on National Highway-44 and Qasim Nagar side. "If an access is made available to the residents towards Narwal bridge and Qasim Nagar, it would be a big respite for them as it will save a lot of time to reach city and other adjoining areas," said Kamal. Another resident Vicky Goswami demanded to lay sewerage pipelines in the area to ease up the drainage system. Ramesh Chander and several others raise the issue of cancellation of their ration cards due to some verification process. "Our ration cards were cancelled citing some verification process with regard to Permanent Resident Certificates (PRCs) due to which the ration under Public Distribution System is out of bounds for us. Even those having PRCs are unable to get their quota of ration," said Ramesh Chander. While Rohit Kumar was also disenchanted due to the withdrawal of his ration card, reasons for which are best known to the concerned authorities. "My ration card was cancelled 8-9 months ago. When I enquired for the reason, I was told to file an affidavit which was subsequently submitted by me but still the facility of ration card has not be restored," said Rohit Kumar. A youth named Aman demanded provision of playing field for children and park for general public while he also sought construction of Multipurpose Community Hall in the locality. "There is no source of amusement and recreation in our locality. We seek construction of a playing filed where children could spend quality time while a park is also a necessity for the residents so that they could refresh themselves from the stress and strain of life. A Multipurpose Community Hall in the area should also come up as we have no such space to arrange social gatherings nearby our houses. There are plenty of open spaces in the vicinity and the construction could be taken up on any of the suitable sites," said Aman. Sunita Kumari and few others raised the voice against erratic water supply to the area while they also castigated the cluttered drains. "We are facing acute shortage of water as the supply being made to the locality is not only irregular but also inadequate. The water is supplied after a gap of 3-4 days and that too for hardly 30-40 minutes. It is almost impossible for the residents to satisfy their daily needs of water with so much less quantity they are getting," said Sunita Kumari and others adding that the pathetic drainage system is another major issue being confronted by the locals. |
