At Gangbal area of Kangan in Central Kashmir's Ganderbal district, an area close to Gurez-Bandipora ridge, a traditional infiltration pass, where one militant was killed. "One militant has been killed so far and the joint operation is on. Weather is not favorable as it is raining heavily in the area," an official said. In the meanwhile, a grenade was lobbed at a CRPF party at Nawa Kadal area of Srinagar that exploded without causing any damage.
However, the identification of militant killed in the encounter at Ganderbal was not revealed as the official said that the operation is still on. It is pertinent to mention here that this is the third encounter that took place in the valley after the Centre abrogated special status to the residents of Jammu and Kashmir.
The encounter came just a day after UNGA session where Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan warned of bloodbath in Kashmir. The encounter also comes at a time when multiple intelligence agencies had warned the government that at least 60 militants have infiltrated into Jammu and Kashmir in the last few weeks alone and another 500 were waiting to sneak in.
Earlier, two encounters took place in the valley after 5th August. First encounter took place last month, when LeT militant and a SPO were killed in Baramulla encounter. One SPO identified as Billal Ahmad succumbed to injuries later, while other J&K police personnel Sub-inspector Amardeep Parihar was rushed to an army hospital for treatment.
The militant was identified as Momin Gojri, a resident of Baramulla and was affiliated to Pakistan-based terror outfit Lashkar-e-Taiba. While on this month, a Lashker-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist involved in an attack on a fruit merchant's home in Sopore was gunned down by security forces in the Jammu and Kashmir town. The militant was identified as LeT's Asif Maqbool Bhatt and was killed in a brief encounter in Sopore in the valley's Baramulla district.
