Illegal mining in river Devak unabated in Purmandal, Utterbehni areas | 'District Administration keeps mum' | | Gurdas Kumar
Early Times Report
Samba, Sept 28: Despite strict order issued by District Administration Samba for imposition of complete ban on excavation of minor minerals in river Devak and periphery of bridges in district, the illegal mining is unabated in Purmandal and Utterbehni areas. DDC Samba had issued order of banning mining in river Devak nearly one and half months ago after number of complaints received from various quarters thereby admin sought reports from different departments including Irrigation and Flood Control, PWD (R&B), PHE, Health and Geology and Mining which informed that rampant excavation along the motorable as well as Rail Bridges is likely to cause damage to the basement and super structure of these bridges. The order further reads that as per report major portion of the district falls in Kandi felt and thus there is huge dependence on the tube well irrigation for the purpose of the cultivation of crops, and it is amply evident from the report of department that uncontrolled excavation is leading to reduction in ground water level table of concerned areas. After reviewing reports of above said departments, the DDC Samba imposed ban on excavation of minerals within 100 feet from earthen bunds, alongside river Devak downstream from bridge at National Highway to village Nanga on right bank and Chak Bhim on the left bank of the river. Ban on excavation of mineral from Purmandal downstream to Utterbehni extending to one kilometer, within periphery of one kilometer upstream and downstream of motorable and railway and motorable bridges of Basanter River. It has been observed that malpractice of illegal mining is continuous under the nose of the administration but later failed to take action against the offenders. |
