Amid uneasy situation in Kashmir, Gulmarg turning into concrete jungle
9/28/2019 10:46:20 PM
Early Times Report
srinagar, Sept 28: Amid a prolonged hartal in Kashmir since the abrogation of Article 370 on August 5, the world famous hill resort of Gulmarg is fast turning into concrete jungle as huge numberof illegal constructions are coming up there.
The locals from Gulmarg and Tangmarg said dozens of construction material loaded tippers enter Gulmarg bowl almost everyday to dump construction material at various construction sites in the area.
Sources said at least one dozen illegal constructions are underway at the famed resort and that the speed of work is so fast that construction is underway on the second floor of the upcoming structures.
"Work has been going on round the clock in three shifts," said a source in know of the matter adding that the Gulmarg Development Authority and police and silent on the issue "for reasons best known to them."
Sources said some senior officials in the GDA are hand in glove with those undertaking illegal constructions and thus has been silent over the illegal activities.
It is pertinent to mention that the illegal constructions are taking place in violation of the directives of the High Court which is hearing several cases linked to vandalisation of the Gulmarg meadows.
Tangmarg locals alleged the builders are paying regular "nazrana" to the concerned including those from police and the GDA.
An official pleading anonymity said the constructions cannot take place without a nexus between the GDA and the local police station.
"Entry of construction material into the Gulmarg is to be checked by the concerned police station whereas it's the duty of the GDA to keep check on illegal construction activities but here both seem to be silent and that is something what explains the nexus," said a senior official on the condition of anonymity.
Some civil society groups have decided to move High Court, once the normalcy is restored in Kashmir. "We have taken several pictures and videos as evidence and will put it before the honorable court," said a civil activist.
Meanwhile the locals have appealed Governor SP Malik to personally into the matter.
