Reprimand from successive governors fails to stop accidents in JK, officials not ready to listen | | | Jehangir Rashid Early Times Report srinagar, Oct 28: Despite the continuous reprimand by successive governors of the state over the recurring road accidents the people at helm are taking things for granted and as such precious lives continue to be lost in these accidents. Former Governor Narendra Nath Vohra and his successor Satya Pal Malik have time and again asked the concerned officials to pull up their socks so that there is an end to the road accidents in the state especially Jammu division. However, the concerned officials have failed to do their bit in this regard and the road accidents continue to take place on frequent basis. Since most of the areas in the Chenab valley and the other districts in Jammu division are hilly the chances of road accidents are always more. At the same time most of the public vehicles operating in these districts have worn out and their fitness has already expired. Despite this these vehicles continue to be operated in the districts thus putting people to risk. In their messages with regards to different accidents the present Governor as well as his predecessor have prayed for peace to the departed souls and wished the bereaved families the strength to bear this sad loss. They also at the same time wished speedy recovery to those injured in the accidents from time to time. The Governors have been saying that every concerned agency should be held accountable for strictly enforcing regulations regarding the age and worthiness of the passenger carrying vehicles, condemnation of unfit vehicles, overloading, over-speeding, fitness and past record of drivers to ply passenger vehicles on notified hill roads and punitive summary fines to be paid by the offenders. They noted that no unqualified/unlicensed person must be allowed to drive any personal, transport or commercial vehicle. Although, the Governors had time and again issued directions to the concerned officials belonging to multiple departments to take corrective measures no such thing has taken place so far. Mere condemnations pour in different quarters with nobody ready to bell the cat and take corrective measures to arrest the trend of recurring road accidents. Role of the traffic police and the transport departments is pivotal in this regard. It is important that higher ups of both the departments rise to the occasion and take stringent measures so that precious lives are not lost due to day in and day out accidents. If this does not happen then the directions issued by the people who matter would have no bearing on the ground. The transport department needs to take stringent measures so that reforms are taken up in a serious manner so that the people heave a sigh of relief. This would ensure that the road accidents would come down and lives would not be lost due to the road accidents. |
