Kashmir-centric leaders in dilemma, sign or not to sign?
10/28/2019 10:59:14 PM

Early Times Report
Jammu, Oct 28: Nearly 30 to 35 Kashmir-centric leaders presently lodged at posh Centaur Hotel on the banks of Dal Lake in Srinagar may have to spend some more time behind the four walls. According to the media reports, the politicians, who were detained on August 5- when centre reorganized erstwhile state of Jammu Kashmir into two union territories J&K and Ladakh- would continue to remain under detention till normalcy returns to Kashmir.
In a related move the J&K administration is likely to shift these political detainees to MLA Hostel in Srinagar as the temperatures are plummeting in the Valley.
According to the media reports, most of the Kashmir-centric leaders who are lodged at Centaur Hotel, which was declared as Subsidiary Jail on August 5, want to come out but before being released they have to give a written assurance that they won't indulge in any such activity which would be detrimental for peace.
An analyst while talking to Early Times said, "The Kashmir-centric leaders are caught between the devil and the deep sea. If they sign a bond it would mean that they won't be able to rake up any of the controversial issues which they used to prior to August 5. If they don't sign it would mean they would have to remain in confinement. They are caught in a dilemma. This means that there is still a long way to go for them."
He said, "Another reason for the Kashmir-centric politicians being caught in quagmire of uncertainty is the emergence of new leadership in Kashmir and the centre making efforts to empower the grass root democracy in Jammu & Kashmir. Holding of Block Development Council elections has strengthened the Panchayati Raj system further."
The analyst said, "Government of India revamping the entire political system in Jammu & Kashmir has put a big question mark over the careers of the dynasts, whose only qualification to rule J&K was that they were the kith and kin of the so called big leaders of Kashmir."
An observer said, "The Kashmir-centric leaders, who during the past so many decades have thrived on selling different narratives to the people, will have to find ways and means to change their mindset. Now, they will have to tell the truth to people that Pakistan and Azadi are nothing but an illusion. Time has come for them to tender an apology to the masses and make a new beginning."
