Growth in city’s boundaries, but not its infrastructure: Munish | Residents of Durga Mandir Gangyal irked by bad roads, garbage pile-ups | | EARLY TIMES REPORT
JAMMU, May 5: Editor Early Times, Munish Gupta, has castigated the administration for failing to keep the momentum going as far as development aspect in several parts of the expanded Jammu city is concerned. “It’s bit ironical that the Jammu city has seen growth only in its boundaries and not at the level of its infrastructure. A large number of localities developed after the expansion of city limits are still deprived of basic civic amenities,” said Munish Gupta. “Provision of elementary necessities of life and their maintenance go side by side. But sorry to say both these characteristics which are vital signs of development is nowhere to be seen in various localities falling under the jurisdiction of Gandhi Nagar Assembly constituency. Area near Durga Mandir in Gangyal is one such habitation where civic amenities are almost negligible due to which people are suffering,” he added. Munish, who is going to contest the next Assembly elections from Gandhi Nagar constituency as an independent candidate, said that the residents of Durga Mandir, Gangyal are livid with the problems they are forced to confront in their day to day life. He said the lanes and drains of the area are in awful condition while there are several spots where garbage gets piles-up but the men at the helm of affairs hardly pay any attention to address these issues. Meanwhile, the residents of Durga Mandir, Gangyal while speaking to Early Times, said that the poorly-maintained roads and by-lanes are an eyesore while they are also irked by the fact that garbage dumps lying everywhere are not cleared regularly. “Did the residents actually benefit after all these years is a question to which we seek answers as we pay a series of taxes to the government,” said the residents. The complaining residents said that the dilapidated condition of interior roads in the area is making life difficult for the locals. “Several stretches of inner roads have been lying in shambles for the past several years,” claim locals, adding that most of the road remain uneven and large potholes have made matters worse for the residents who are facing trouble in commuting to their places of work, schools or colleges. “The roads lie in a pathetic state as they are not carpeted for the last so many years. Entering or exiting the locality using these dilapidated roads gives goose bumps to the residents,” said several residents of Durga Mandir, Gangyal, while talking to Early Times. While the bad condition of roads is annoying the residents, they are also peeved over the piles of garbage in every nook and corner of their locality. They complain that the garbage in the bins overflow onto the streets. “The garbage pile-ups are agonizing experience for the residents. At some spots, the streets can be found full of rubbish due to indiscriminate dumping of garbage,” they said. Residents point out that the waste in the bins along the streets is not getting cleared on regular basis. “We have no other option but to put up with the pungent stench emanating from the piles of garbage at several spots in the area. The garbage litters everywhere. The entire area paints a sorry picture, making everyday life of residents difficult,” the locals rued. |
