SUNDERBANI, June 11: There may be a ban on illegal extraction of stones and other construction material from the different water bodies of the union territory of Jammu & Kashmir but it does not make any difference for violators in this tehsil.
Early Times has learnt from sources that the violators of law are extracting stones from the different water bodies in separate villages of this tehsil in the Rajouri district. The sources said that extraction of stone without any permission has been going on for many years and that too under the nose of the concerned department.
“Over the past many years tippers and trucks have caused havoc in the different water bodies of villages like Sadeen, Bamla, Nahoti, Lath, Makol, Nallah, Feya, Devak and Badrai. The tipper and truck owners extract the stones from the water bodies and then supply the same to the customers in the different villages of the district,” said sources. Sources said that since the whole process is going on in illegal ways the truck and tipper owners don’t pay any royalty to the local administration. They said that in this way a huge loss is being caused to the government ex-chequer and assets are being vandalized without any compensation being paid to the government.
The locals of the tehsil have alleged that the District Material Officer is keeping a mum over the whole issue and no action whatsoever has been taken against the culprits up to this moment of time. They said that although the issue has been brought into the notice of district administration many times no action has been taken so far.
When contacted District Material Officer, Rajouri, Jatinder Singh said that his department is facing dearth of staff and as such it is not possible to take action against the violators of law. He acknowledged the fact that complaints have come from areas like Nowshera but no action has been taken due to the want of staff.
