Frozen taps, water bodies start melting as mercury rises in Kashmir | | | EARLY TIMES REPORT SRINAGAR, Feb 4: Taps and water bodies which were frozen due to sub zero temperature have started melting due to surge in the mercury much to the delight of people who suffered heavy losses after pipes and other equipment were damaged due to intense cold wave conditions. Meanwhile, there could be scattered to fairly widespread rain or snow during the next 24 hours in the Kashmir valley, where plains, including summer capital, Srinagar received fresh very light snowfall while upper heights, including world famous ski resort of Gulmarg, had moderate snowfall early Thursday morning. A day after the 40-day-long harshest period Chilai Kalan, ended on January 30, Srinagar witnessed coldest night of the winter when the minimum temperature recorded major drop and settled at minus 8.8 degree. The Chilai Kalan was coldest in three decades in Kashmir, freezing taps and water bodies , drains and nallahs badly affecting water supply. Hundreds of water motors, pipes and other water equipment, including water tanks, worth lakhs of rupees were damaged after water froze. Plumbers and other workers were in great demand while people also burned wood and used kerosene blow lumps to defreeze the frozen water in pipes for restoration of water supply. |
