Has lowest average of stunted, underweight offsprings across country

JAMMU, Feb 4: Contrary to some misconceptions about its backwardness and lack of development, Jammu and Kashmir has topped the list of States and Union Territories, except one, in case of average of stunted and underweight children across the country.
According to the latest data shared by the Ministry of Women and Child Development two types of reports have been shared one is by National Family Health Survey (NFHS-4) report of 2015-16 and another is Comprehensive National Nutrition Survey (CNNS) report of 2016-18.
According to the NFHS report, the national average of underweight children below five years of age is 35.7 percent while 38.4 percent of children are stunted at the national level, while as per report of CNNS, the prevalence of underweight and stunting among children is 33.4 percent and 34.7 percent respectively.
However in case of Jammu and Kashmir, as per NFHS report, the underweight children below five years is 16.6 percent while 27.4 are stunted, while as per CNNS report the underweight children in JK is 13.1 percent while stunted children are 15.5 percent.
The only State which is near to Jammu and Kashmir is Mizoram in which according to NFHS report the underweight children below five years is 12.0 percent while 28.1 percent stunted, while as per CNNS report the underweight children in Mizoram is 11.3 percent while stunted children are 27.4 percent. The population of Mizoram is far less as compared to Jammu and Kashmir while Jammu and Kashmir is far better than all other states and Union Territories of the country.
Bihar is among the top of the list with highest number of stunted as well as underweight children according to both the reports. As per NFHS report the underweight children under five years in Bihar is 43.9 percent and stunted children percentage stood at 48.3 percent, while as per CNNS report the underweight children below five years is 38.7 percent, while stunted children 42 percent.
Similarly Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh, Rajasthan all have average above the national average. Even neighbouring Himachal Pradesh is far behind Jammu and Kashmir with underweight children as per NFHS report is 21.2 percent, while stunted children 27.4 percent, while as per CNNS report the underweight children 22.6 percent and stunted children 28.4 percent.
