SRINAGAR, Feb 4: The accommodation for the employees both teaching and non-teaching at the University of Kashmir has turned out to be a bone of contention since the deserving ones are left out in this while those who were not entitled to the same getting the accommodation. Sources told Early Times that last month the university authorities provided accommodation to a Professor of Earth Sciences despite the fact the Professor was way behind in the queue while waiting in the waiting list.
The Professor shifted during the night hours to the residential quarter although the same was allotted to a Professor of the Department of Statistics at the varsity. “The aggrieved Professor has submitted a representation to Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, Chancellor of University of Kashmir.
There is no fun for having an accommodation committee at the varsity when the deserving academicians or non-teaching staff do not get the accommodation. Violations have been witnessed in the past as well but no action whatsoever was taken,” said sources
Sources said that an incumbent Joint Registrar was given the Professor quarter even though he was not entitled for the same. When the Joint Registrar was on deputation to Baba Ghulam Shah Badshah University (BGSBU) Rajouri he did not pay a single penny as House Rent Allowance (HRA) towards the University of Kashmir.
“An Assistant Professor of Social Sciences has been residing in rented accommodation in Habak while his two colleagues got accommodation in main campus & Mirza Bagh campus few years back through clandestine route. They have been appointed as wardens of Boys & Girls hostels and they made analogy that they are wardens and were allotted accommodation out of queue,” said sources.
Sources said that another Assistant Professor who had been appointed Associate Professor in SKUAST in February 2020 enjoyed free accommodation in the varsity in the Mirza Bagh without paying a single penny to varsity. They said that a committee should be formed to look into these issues since it is the varsity that is the loser at the end of the day.
“The former Vice Chancellor has given out of turn accommodation to a lady doctor in Associate Professors Quarter as per rule she is entitled for lecturer’s flat. More than 50 teachers are residing in rented accommodation outside the campus and are waiting for allotment but the same is not possible as there is nepotism and favouritism,” said sources.
Sources said that a non-teaching employee staff quarter adjacent to the Jammu & Kashmir Bank was provided to an employee who was not in the queue. A Class IV employee has been given a Class III quarter in the main campus due to the influence of the Joint Registrar (Budget) with the same employee changing five quarters since past five years.
“A peon working in the Registrar’s office has been given another MS quarter in the main campus due to the intervention of Registrar. There are many more class IV employees who retired long back but are still residing in the quarters. More than 100 employees are waiting in queue and they are residing outside the campus in rented accommodation.
