After backlash, Cong climbs down | | | Senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad, playing safe during his speech in Rajya Sabha and just talking about restoration of J&K’s statehood has proven it beyond doubt that the grand old party of the country has realized that it can no more corner BJP over the abrogation of Article 370. The countrymen have endorsed Prime Minister, Narendra Modi’s masterstroke and are happy over J&K merging completely with the Union of India. When Union Home Minister, Amit Shah, had introduced the Bill in the Rajya Sabha on August 5, 2019, to revoke J&K’s special status, Azad had opposed the move tooth and nail. He had warned that the country will have to face serious repercussions and J&K’s special status should be kept intact. After the Parliament gave its nod to scrap the Article 370, Congress leaders launched a campaign against the Centre. Former president of All India Congress Committee (AICC), Rahul Gandhi, played into the hands of adversaries, by issuing immature statements. His assertions were encashed by Pakistan to launch a vicious anti-India propaganda. Later Rahul had to take back his words but by then, he had done enough damage. The Congress had to face a strong backlash from the people across the country for ignoring the national sentiment and talking in a language of Pakistan. It was after many months, the Congress Party realized that it cannot just keep on going against the mood of the people. It appears that now the party has fallen in the line. Azad not talking about Article 370 is a significant development and it indicates that the Congress has surrendered. As far as the restoration of J&K’s statehood is considered it should not be a problem. At the time of bifurcating the erstwhile J&K State into two Union Territories the Union Home Minister and the Prime Minister had promised at the floor of the house that as soon normalcy is restored in J&K it will get the statehood back. During the past one and half year situation in Jammu and Kashmir has shown a significant improvement and if the things keep on moving at the same pace the Centre would definitely consider restoring J&K’s statehood and it can happen before assembly elections are held. Statehood is achievable and the Congress seems to have realized that it has to talk sense to survive in the Political arena of the country as well as J&K. |
