Early Times Report

Jammu, June 19: Even as the Jammu and Kashmir government is focusing on the promotion of film tourism in the UT, the government has seemingly failed to come to the rescue of the artists affected by the Covid restrictions.
While the government claims to be “finalizing J&K Film Policy” to showcase the “splendid locales of J&K besides assisting the filmmakers”, the same government has been unable to give any relief to the artists, “who could not earn even a penny due to Covid restrictions.”
Recently the theater artist community in Jammu held protest demonstrations outside Abhinav Theater in the winter capital here.
The artists said many of them have been pushed to starvation in the wake of the Covid restrictions, which prevent any social gatherings something vital for the artists to showcase their talent on the stage.
The artists say, “It’s unfortunate on the part of the government to be concerned about the Bollywood, when the local talent is unable to manage two square meals a day.”
Ironically while the artists demand a relief package from the government on the pattern of what was announced for the Shikara Walas in Kashmir, the administration is busy preparing a database of local talent that can contribute in Bollywood.
“Getting a chance in Bollywood is subject to if we survive the prevalent starvation. This is really unfortunate that the government is focusing on the Bollywood when the local artists are dying unheard,” complained a delegation of local theater artists, on the condition of anonymity.
Meanwhile in an official handout the government said on June 18 that the “new film policy lays thrust on harnessing the local talent in the field of movie making in J&K and creation of employment opportunities for the youth in the field.” “For this a complete database of the available local talent in J&K is being prepared for hosting on the website for enabling the film makers interested in shooting their film in the UT to utilize their services…
To register themselves, local talent of J&K working in the field of movie making can fill in their details by or before 10, July 2021, by going on the link,” the official handout said.
