Govt fails to explore horticulture potential in Jammu region | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Mar 9: Contrary to the official handout issued by the J&K government, authorities have failed to tap horticulture potential in the Jammu region. Jammu region has huge potential for horticulture because the present regime has failed to explore it due to the casual approach of those at the helm of the affairs. “The coterie of Babus-which has controlled the whole J&K administration is least bothered about formulating long term policies for this region. The only concern of this coterie is to implement short-term policies only on papers just to mislead the Union Government”, a source said. As per reports, in the Jammu region, particularly in the districts of Udhampur, Ramban, Doda, Kishtwar, and Reasi olive cultivation was introduced a couple of decades ago. It was a success but here the problem of processing poses a formidable obstacle. As per a study conducted by scholars, the top work of olive was undertaken on wild olive trees that are found in these districts. A small-scale olive processing plant has been set up in Ramban by the state government but here again, for want of appropriate technology, the oil extracted is not very clear and free from residue. Some belts in the Jammu region have the potential of producing vegetables. The diversion to vegetable cultivation from traditional crops can easily increase at least double the income of the farmers. Some vegetable belts need to be created in Ramban, Udhampur, and Jammu districts but to no avail. Jammu region is famous for producing delicious mangoes. One of the main problems that the mango producers in Jammu are facing is that of proper marketing. The fruits growers market their products through various channels. However, most of the small growers sell their produce to pre-harvest contractors. |
