| Udhampur prople see ray of hope in commission | | Reviving Devika river | | Early Times Report
Udhampur Aug 12: The commission set up to revive the dying Udhampur's most sacred Devika River has generated fresh hopes. The people of Udhampur are related to the holy river emotionally and religiously , high sewage contamination and encroachment on its bank today has made its water unfit for human use.
Not to speak of this even ground water quality in river and traditional Bowlis (ponds) on the bank of the river has been affected with respect to Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) and there is high level of inorganic and organic pollution in it.
The river has religious significance as people conduct all the rites on its bank. Despite direction of J and K High Court regarding encroachment and pollution in river administration failed to take any concrete steps to save the river there has been a lot of protests made by the working association and the people of the town against the encroachers ,few months back 10 member Commission headed by SDM Ramnagar has been set up to identify the target stretches of the river and clearing them of encroachments , process was initiated on fast track but as soon there is been a change in postions of the admistrators the reports and action seems to be in cold bags speak a local Vishnu Singh The river is an integral element of the heritage and culture of the Jammu region. Its sanctity and sacredness is quite evident from the large number of temples and pilgrimage sites situated along its banks. But in due course of time, a large number of encroachments have taken place along the river bank and several commercial establishments have come up discharging untreated effluents into the holy river, impeding its flow and polluting the same he added Keeping the objective of restoring the sacred river to its pristine glory, the district administration has set up the commission to demarcate the river according to the revenue records as well as identify and demarcate the encroachments that have come up along its banks and embankments which is a welcome step but nothing has been seen in its 2nd phase ,it's just the markings and markings been made by the administration in past present and will be continued in future but the encroachments will also follow parlerlly said president of Devika Suraksha Smiti The commission conducted survey of nearly 300 Kanals of land traversing Gangar, Rount, Shivnagar and Umara revenue villages, besides, the neighboring and adjoining areas along the course of the river to identify illegal occupation and encroachments. Will the government take any legal steps against illegal occupants and the encroachers?
While speaking to media in this matter SDM Ramnagar Anshul Garg said we have completed the demarcation and completed the reports few time ago as the revenue officials have also some other tasks to get completed and it took bit of time but we have submitted our reports to the authorities and as the 15 th of August is heading so the officials are quite busy in arrangements and aur task was just to complete and submitting of demarcation reports not of removing illegal structures and one must have the proper reports and plans before taking any further legal steps as it's not my jurisdiction so I'm not supposed to but administration will take further steps in the regard.
