Early Times Report

Jammu, Aug 12: Panic gripped the Kunjwani area in the outskirts of Jammu owing to the mock drill conducted by the Army ahead of Independence Day celebrations, to assess the preparedness of the Army to counter a possible terror attack, said sources. "Army this morning held mock-cum-search drill exercise in Kunjwani area which created panic among the residents", said a source adding that the area was cordoned off during the exercise. Army personnel with arms took positions on the buildings, bullet proof vehicles were also pressed into service and loudspeakers alarms were also used to create mock situation.
During the drill, different locations were searched in Kunjwani area while all the vehicular movement was stopped to check the preparedness of the forces during any type of combat operation. However, a rumour of presence of a group of terrorists in the area, panicked locals. Since morning, people rang up the media houses to find out the facts and to confirm the report of suspected militants. Meanwhile, traffic was stopped on the road connecting Kunjwani to Trikuta Nagar (internal road) during the exercise near Carmel Convent School which is situated on this road, Parents also rushed to the schools and picked up their wards.
Social media remained occupied and loaded with queries about Army personnel searching the localities. "It was a mock drill and there was nothing to panic," a senior police officer here said. He said that it was conducted to check the preparedness. The officer said that such drills are also being conducted in forest areas and other locations of the city.
Pertinent to mention here that a letter threatening series of blasts in Jammu on I-Day was also received by the office of the senior police officer and a national daily. A case was registered into the matter and the document was sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory to ascertain the authenticity of the letter.
However, till few hours of the exercise, police was not aware about the mock drill following which rumors started surging and panic gripped the whole Jammu district. Sources in the army stated that none of the sister agency was informed about the mock drill to create actual situation.
