Baseer Khan indispensable or Government a lame duck? | | | Abodh Sharma JAMMU, Sept 24: By allowing Baseer Khan, DDC Kishtwar who was arrested by the state vigilance organization and later released on bail by a competent court the previous day in the infamous Gulmarg land scam to assume office immediately after he was bailed out, the government has proved itself to be a lame duck that needs support of the corrupt bureaucrats to keep standing. The arrest of Baseer Khan in the infamous Gulmarg Land scam wherein he was accused of misusing his official position to regularize possession of prime state land in favour of a local businessman under Roshni Act at throw away prices was already delayed for want of permission required for arrest of IAS officers. However, eventhough SVO had a clear cut case against him, he was allowed by the Government to continue at sensitive administrative post including DDC Srinagar. He was also posted as DDC Udhampur and was recently posted as DDC Kishtwar following communal flair up there on August 9 last. Baseer Khan however, is not an isolated case in point that on the hind side of Omar's rhetoric to provide transparent, accountable and clean administration to the people of the state, his government has not only stood by the officers, including bureaucrats and technocrats with shady service records but patronized them with lucrative and sensitive postings. Mehboob Iqbal, then Divisional Commissioner Kashmir who was co accused in the Gulmarg Land scam faced serious charges of corruption during his prolonged service record, but he retired honourably and enjoyed many rewarding assignments. Similarly, his brother Eijaz Iqbal, also an IAS officer also faced serious charges of corruption, but retired unharmed after enjoying postings of importance and affluence. Besides bureaucrats, many technocrats have also enjoyed lucrative postings despite serious allegations of misappropriation, corruption and nepotism. Dr. Madhu Khullar became Director health services Jammu and Dr. Aneice Choudhary became Principal GMC despite the fact that both of them had serious allegations against them. Shamefully, a Chief Engineer of the Mechanical Engineering Department was allowed to continue in office despite being caught in a trap case in his office along with graft money. The cases prove that Baseer Khan is just the latest recruit in the State's army of corrupt officers who enjoy government's unwavering support and patronage even as the Chief Minister swears by transparency and accountability in administration and governance. |
