Spurious drug trade continues, death knocks doors of commoners in Kathua hospital | | | Sumit Sharma JAMMU, May 10: Even after being under the watch of High Court, spurious drugs continue to wreak havoc and play with the lives of the commoners. In a recent incident, a patient was brought back from the clutches of death in District Hospital Kathua. Panic gripped among the medicos in the district Hospital, Kathua after a patient had a narrow escape after he was injected (I/V) the Propofol drugs recommended and supplied by the Drugs Control Department. However, filled with the anger, and fear of being beaten by the locals, the Medical Superintendent of the Kathua hospital wrote to the Drugs Department, complaining of the alleged sub standard drugs supplied to the Government hospitals, putting the lives of the patients at risk. The incident took place barely a couple of days ago of the announcement by Minister for Health and Medical Education, Taj Mohi-ud-Din that the Government will review 14000 licenses that have been issued 2001 onwards to fix the problem of spurious drug menace which is more rampant. As per official communique by Medical Superintendent Kathua Hospital having No DTHK/1714 to Controller Provincial Medical Store, Jammu, " a young patient having 35 years age was taken up for Elective Cholecystectomy with all pre-operative parameters normal. For induction of the General Anesthesia, patient was given injection Propofol I/V followed by injection Scoline 2cc I/V and then the patient was incubated. After 5 minutes, patient developed sudden Bracycardia, Hypotension, and rashes all over the body. SPO 2 level also decreased to 77%. The patient was revived with great difficulty. The injection Propofol is manufactured by Kawality Pharmaceuticals Amritsar.” This report was sent to Drug Controller's office. When contacted Controller Provincial Medical Store, Jammu, Dr. Saleem admitted that he had received complaint in this connection, adding that hospitals have been told to keep this office inform periodically for further action. Meanwhile, Drugs Controller, Jammu and Kashmir Dr. Baldev Raj Sharma said that the samples will be collected of the said medicine for testing purpose. He further assured of replacement of the existing medicine if found substandard. |
