Further fragmentation in North Kashmir following recent Lok Sabha polls | It is voters versus boycotters | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, May 10: Parliamentary election for the Baramulla-Kupwara Lok Sabha seat has led to division among ranks of people living in these two districts. This has led to situation where infighting has already taken place in some areas with police taking action against the people who vouched for boycott of elections. Residents of Uri, Kupwara and Handwara are up in arms against the people residing in areas like Baramulla and Sopore following the recent development under which voters were thrashed and beaten up by supporters of poll boycott. The situation has already taken an ugly turn and cracks are very much visible. Sharing their views with Early Times some of the people who voted during the Parliamentary elections opine that nobody can coerce them not to vote in this age. They say that vote is an important instrument of change and development is possible only when honest as well as upright people are elected. "Everybody has his or her own point of view and nobody can dictate terms. We were comfortable in voting as boycott has given us nothing. It is due to boycott only that incompetent and incapable people make it to the Assembly as well as Parliament. Only an intelligent legislator can deliver goods for us," said the group of voters. It would be in place to mention here that residents of Baramulla and Sopore stopped public vehicles coming from Uri, Kupwara and Handwara at Baramulla and Sopore bus stands. These people then entered the vehicles and thrashed the passengers who had cast their votes a day earlier. The action from the supporters of election boycott came in from sharp criticism from the different sections of the society. Police has since launched a crackdown on these people and many arrests have been affected so far. Hardliner and chairman of his faction of Hurriyat Conference, Syed Ali Shah Geelani was in fact forced to carry out a video message asking people to exercise restraint and not to victimize the masses who cast their votes during the elections. Geelani said that situation would not have emerged had he been allowed to carry out the 'anti-election' campaign across the Valley. There is a general perception among the people that the anti-election campaign has always come to the rescue of mainstream parties like National Conference. The people opine that since there is a general boycott in cities and towns, the NC candidates emerge victorious with the other parties not able to make a mark. "Time has come when separatists should think beyond the election boycott. If the boycott continues in future as well then there are chances that there would be no change with NC continuing to hold sway. This does not augur well for the future of the state more so Kashmir valley with development taking a hit," said a group of people. This group of people said that masses can heave a sigh of relief once there is change of guard adding that this would make the political parties cautious as well. They said that politicians would not take masses for a ride and think about them.
