SHRC confined to flames of NC-Congress battle
2 months on, Commission sans Chairman, members

Jammu, Aug 22: State government's hypocrisy towards human rights has been exposed by the fact that for over two months, it has not cared to appoint a chairman and members to the State Human Rights Commission after they achieved their superannuation in June this year.
The term of then Chairman-Rafiq Fida and two other members of the SHRC expired in June 2014 leaving the Commission totally redundant.
Sources within the Commission maintained that the appointment of the four members and the Chairman is pending solely because of the reason that both Congress and National Conference leaders have turned adamant to place their favourites on the vacant posts and the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah could not make a decision over the appointment on the vacant posts.
According to reliable sources, the file having the details of the new members and the Chairman has been submitted by the law Minister Mir Saifullah to the Chief Minister's office for his (Chief Ministers') final nod as Chief Minister is the head of the appointment Committee but owing to a political drama that has arisen between the coalition partners the weak CM could not find a way out suitable to both the coalition partners.
"Over 50 cases have been registered at Jammu bench of the Commission and over 70 cases have been registered at the head office of the Commission in Srinagar-all of gross human rights violations but having no member the cases are awaiting disposal", said sources.
It was Chief Minister Omar Abdullah who promised protection of human rights in the turmoil affected state during his first assembly sitting when a former Justice of the Commission resigned from the post of the Chairman but the same Chief Minister has failed to be firm on his stand even now when a new government is going to be at the helm of the affairs within next three-four months.
