NC's Chief Ministerial candidate has no seat to fight elections from | | | Jehangir Rashid SRINAGAR, Aug 22: Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah might have declared himself as the Chief Ministerial candidate of National Conference for 2014 Assembly elections, but the truth of matter is that Omar is yet to find a constituency where from he will fight the elections. The National Conference is delaying the issuance of the fourth list of candidates and the primary reason is that they are not able to find a 'safe' seat for their working president who also happens to be the Chief Minister of the state. There are no more safe bastions and as such the party leadership is in a fix as to where from Omar will fight the elections. Sonwar was the last choice for Omar, but of late this option too seems to be slipping out. Sources told Early Times that a group of the party workers and activists of Sonwar constituency are not in favour of giving the mandate to National Conference working president. This has put Omar in a tight corner and it seems to be difficult for him to come out of this situation. "Few days back a group of NC workers and activists of Sonwar constituency made it clear to party leadership that Omar should not be given the mandate from this constituency. They don't want the mandate to be given to Mohammad Yasin Shah as well. This group of people wants the mandate to be given to Ghulam Qadir Pardesi," said sources. Sources said that if Omar is given the mandate from Sonwar then there are chances that the group of NC workers opposing his candidature would resort to cross voting. This would give benefit to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) candidate from this constituency and he may ultimately bag the seat. "Omar will not take a chance to fight the elections from Ganderbal constituency since the party has apprehensions that it will lose from one of their strongholds from Kashmir. It is quite likely that party may field Sheikh Ishfaq Jabbar from this seat as his defeat would not mean a lot for the party. But if Omar contests and he loses then all is done and dusted for National Conference," said sources. National Conference leadership will not field Omar from Hazratbal constituency since one of its old leaders is making a comeback from there. Mohammad Sayeed Akhoon who has represented the constituency in the past is all set to get the nod from the party leadership to fight the Assembly elections this time around. In 2008 Assembly elections Dr. Sheikh Mustafa Kamaal was given the mandate from Hazratbal constituency. "National Conference leadership especially it's General Secretary, Ali Mohammad Sagar is up against an uphill task and that is to find a seat for Omar Abdullah. Sagar would have to take out the cat from the bag and come out a solution that would ensure Omar's political career in Jammu and Kashmir does not come to an abrupt end. This is a million dollar question and as on date nobody knows the answer," said sources. |
