Non-Muslims in J&K are not a minority | Majority view | | Neha Jammu, Aug 22: A number of so-called trouble-shooters and Kashmir experts have been suggesting that Kashmiris are a "beautiful nation" and that "democracy means that majority decides". "It is my desire to see Kashmir issue should get resolved. It is such a beautiful nation, the violence should end and love should rule here. We should forget the petty things and love should rule…Democracy means that majority decides. J&K is the only State in India which had its own constituent Assembly and whatever that Assembly decided, the Constitution of India accepted and incorporated that," said one such "Kashmir expert" in Srinagar the other day. Kashmiris are not a different nation; they are part and parcel of the Indian nation, leave aside a few fanatics here and there who want the Pakistani rule in Kashmir, which is not going to happen. To call Kashmiris a nation would be nothing but an act of sedition. That's it. This Delhi-based "Kashmir-expert" made these suggestions after meeting with some separatists in Kashmir and said that he would discuss the whole issue with the Central Government so that the issue was resolved to the satisfaction of the "majority". He didn't utter a word about the aspirations of the people of Jammu province, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Christians. Nor did he refer to the aspirations of the internally displaced Kashmiri Hindus, who have been living in refugee camps and demanding a separate homeland for them within Kashmir since decades now. He had also no place whatsoever in his scheme of things for the Ladakhi Buddhists. He also chose to ignore the fact that the people of Kashmir are not a homogeneous lot and that they are vertically divided into a number of groups putting forth contradictory and mutually exclusive solutions. The fact of the matter is that he put all of his eggs in the basket of the Kashmiri separatists who, according to him, represent the general will - a stand similar to the one Islamabad took on August 18, 19 and 20, which led to the collapse of India-Pakistan talks. No one can deny that Jammu and Kashmir is a Muslim-majority state. It is a fact that Muslims constitute overall majority in the state. But the non-Muslims in the state could also not be termed as a minority. The non-Muslims constitute overwhelming majority in Jammu province and Ladakh region, which constitute the state's over 88 per cent of its land area. They plus the internally-displaced Kashmiri Hindus and Kashmiri Sikhs, represent almost 40 per cent of the state's population. No one in Jammu and Ladakh and the refugee camps gives any credence to the 2011 census figures as they believe that these figures were fudged by the vested interests to cause harm to Jammu province and help the vested interests in Kashmir to play their nefarious games. It is a crime against man and humanity to preach a solution that is not only against the unity and integrity of India and highly divisive, but also against the people who inhabit over 88 per cent of the state's land area. Will these perverted trouble-shooters stop poking their dirty nose in the affairs of Jammu and Kashmir? And will they also appreciate the results of the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, which were against fake secularists and divisive forces? |
