Overconfident Tara may face surprise | Modi effect still intact in his constituency | | Sandeep Bhat
Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 9: The results of Lok Sabha elections will effect the results of upcoming assembly elections in the state of Jammu and Kashmir where Modi wave is still visible in large parts of Jammu region. The BJP-led government in Delhi is only five month old and the recent election results in Maharashtra and Haryana are testimony to the success story of BJP and Modi effect. BJP in both the states emerged as the single largest party and has already formed government there. The national president of BJP, Amit Shah and prime minister Narinder Modi have already made strategy to fight elections in the state of Jammu and Kashmir and if reports are to be believed, Modi will be the star campaigner in these elections and will hold more than dozen rallies in the state. The state had recently seen the worst ever floods and the way the prime minister took personal initiative to mitigate the problems of the affected people is known to every one. On Diwali, he spent the day with jawans and flood victims and gave a message to the people of the state that he is very concerned about their welfare. The BJP in the state is fighting elections on the name of Modi and to achieve Mission 44+ but it is unlikely to get full support of the people as it had got during the parliamentary elections when it won both the seats of Jammu and Udhampur. In Khour and Akhnoor assembly segments, BJP had secured over 23000 votes and Congress almost was wiped out despite the fact that deputy chief minister Tara Chand represents Khour. Tara Chand’s name got spoilt due to the allegations of corruption against him. Talking to Early Times, Raj Kumar, a resident of Jammu, said that people in Khour by and large had already decided to vote in favour of the party they had voted for in the parliamentary elections. He alleged that Congress has only given rise to corruption and corrupt leaders. This time also Congress repeated those candidates who have been facing charges of corruption and favouritism. Tara Chand may get surprise in his constituency this time, he said. Sunita Kumari, a teacher, alleged that in the education department, which is headed by Tara Chand, there was rampant corruption. “In my personal view, it is just not Modi effect or BJP wave, but also the alleged misdeeds and corrupt practice of Congress leaders which will be deciding factor in the assembly results. People in our state want to see the change,” she said. A senior Congress leader who wished not to be named said people in Khour were expected to spring surprise in the upcoming elections. He said that BJP itself had not repeated its candidates this time. Despite that BJP will give them a tough fight though there is unhappiness in BJP camp also over the distribution of tickets to lesser known candidates but the Modi effect will work for them, he concluded. |
