Valley on high alert, militants intensify attacks in South Kashmir | | | Bashir Assad
Early Times Report
Srinagar, Nov 21: As warned earlier by the intelligence agencies, militants are trying to disrupt the polls in Kashmir valley particularly in South Kashmir. They have started targeting rallies of political parties and their workers to create fears among the voters which could certainly have an impact on the overall voter turn-out. Recently the Intelligence agencies had warned that militant organizations may disrupt the ensuing assembly election by attacking security convoys and political workers in south Kashmir. Reports highlighted that the militants may carry out attacks on rallies and political workers in South Kashmir at the first place. Only the other day three militants were killed by the security forces in Tral tehsil of South Kashmir. However, there was no let up in subversive activities as the militants Friday carried out attacks on election rallies and workers of a political party in South Kashmir's Kulgam and Shopian Districts. In the first attack a grenade was at a PDP rally in Gandiwani village of Noorabad in south Kashmir's Kulgam district, police said. The grenade, however, didn't explode. PDP candidate for Noorabad constituency Abdul Majid Padder was addressing the rally when the incident happened. But due to the swift action of the police personnel deployed at the rally site, the militant who lobbed the grenade was arrested before he could flee from the spot. In another incident unidentified gunmen fired several shots towards the residence of PDP candidate for Shopian late Thursday night. However, no damage was reported from the place. Reports said that the militants who fired upon the residence of the PDP candidate, Mohammad Yusuf Bhat. The whole area has been cordoned off and a search operation launched, a police official said. Intelligence agencies intercept conversation Meanwhile intelligence agencies have intercepted a conversation on November 18 between the JKLF leader Mohammad Yasin Malik and the most wanted militant commander Hafiz Saeed who is reportedly in PAK. Intelligence reports said that in one of the conversations Saeed is heard saying that the polls must be disrupted. While the BJP must be stopped at any cost, they must also ensure that the voter turnout is extremely low. The democratic process must be hampered at any cost and the people of Jammu and Kashmir must fear to vote, Saeed's conversation with Malik suggests. Saeed further goes on to say," take the youth into confidence and tell them that the Indian government can provide nothing. Tell them that the Indian army is only out to carry out atrocities against the Kashmiris and Pakistan is the only solution to their problems. Make sure that the voters do not go out and vote. It is more important that the youth do not vote and democracy must be hampered at any cost. Put in all your resources and be assured that you shall be rewarded well," Sayeed further goes on to say. More intercepts would also go on to state the following." We have our men ready. However we want disruptions to happen from within. Infiltrating is not easy at the moment. However we will try and send at least 300 men into Kashmir to support you." High alert in the Valley: Meanwhile a high alert has been issued by the Intelligence Bureau as the state of Jammu and Kashmir goes to polls. The rallies by the BJP leaders to be conducted in the Valley are particularly on very high alert and the Intelligence Bureau has termed the threat as a Grade-Aone directing security forces to be on their toes. |
