Grenade lobbed towards PDP's rally does not explode in Kulgam, grenade thrower arrested | | | Jehangir Rashid
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Nov 21: Panic gripped the Gandiwani village in Noorabad in South Kashmir's Kulgam district after a grenade was lobbed on an election rally of Peoples Democratic Party. The grenade however did not explode and as such there were no casualties at the venue of the rally. Reports said the people taking part in the rally caught hold of the grenade thrower and handed him to the police. The rally was being addressed by PDP's candidate for Noorabad assembly segment Abdul Majid Padder when the grenade was thrown on it. The grenade thrower has been identified as Naushad Ganai, son of Abdul Gani, resident of Awagam. As the rally was going on the grenade thrower lobbed the grenade which landed in a drain and as such did not explode. Seeing the grenade missed the intended target the grenade thrower tried to flee. However, he could not run away and was overpowered by the participants of the rally. The grenade thrower received severe thrashing from the people and was handed over to the police. The PDP activists locked the grenade thrower in a room and he was handed over to police once the police party reached the venue of rally. Had the grenade landed at the intended target it could have resulted in serious injuries to many people taking part in the rally? However, this eventuality was avoided since the grenade did not explode. A police spokesman said the grenade thrower was handed over to police by the people. "During investigations, it was found he was involved in the killing of one treasury officer namely Bashir Ahmad in 2005. In this connection case FIR no. 53/2005 under sections 452, 364, 302 RPC, 7/27 ACT stands registered in police station Kulgam. He remained detained in the same case for two years," the police spokesman said. Following the incident clashes broke between the supporters of National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party. The PDP workers and activists alleged that the grenade thrower owed allegiance to National Conference and he was paid money to cause harm to the PDP candidate along with the party workers and activists. Police used force to disperse the workers and activists of warring political parties. The situation remained tense in the area and it was brought under control after some time. Meanwhile, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has strongly condemned the grenade attack at its rally in Gandiwani village in Noorabad in South Kashmir's Kulgam district. In a statement, the party president Mehbooba Mufti said it is an act of cowardice on part of the PDP's political opponents who are feeling unnerved by the party's growing popularity and appeal among the people. Expressing relief that nobody was hurt in the incident, Mehbooba said such incidents are meant to disrupt the ongoing electoral process in the state. The PDP President said it 'exposes' the lapses in security being provided to PDP candidates in the ongoing election campaign. She demanded a thorough probe into the matter and said the police should immediately come out with the facts about it before the public.
