Early Times Report
Jammu, Nov 21: Fanatic Syed Ali Shah Geelani has, it seems, turned mad. Or, it can be said that the possibility of the BJP winning a few seats in the Kashmir valley has been keeping him awake in the night. He is feeling so alarmed and unnerved that he has attempted to achieve something that is not achievable. For example, he has urged the "minorities to boycott the Assembly elections so that the BJP doesn't succeed in its game plan. Geelani has said that a solution to the Kashmir issue is still pending and it is the fundamental duty of the religious minorities in the state to boycott the Assembly elections. Religious minorities of Jammu and Kashmir, including Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists and Christians, must boycott the upcoming elections and "defeat the nefarious designs" of the BJP and the RSS in the state, he, in fact, has said.
The Geelani's whole refrain is that the BJP and the RSS want to divide the people of Jammu and Kashmir on communal lines, disturb communal brotherhood in the state, dilute the so-called Kashmiriyat and convert India into a Hindu nation and it is the duty of all, including the minorities like the Hindu, Sikhs, Christians and Buddhists in the state, to refrain from voting. All this should establish that Geelani has lost his way or he has gone totally mad. How else should one interpret his nasty appeal? He has urged those people to boycott the elections who are all victims of terrorism and the kind of communal politics that the likes of Geelani have been playing since decades.
The minorities in the state are not going to oblige Geelani. It is not only the minorities which will rebuff Geelani by exercise their right to franchise on an unprecedented scale. Even the bulk of majority community in Kashmir will not oblige him. The reason is that the political parties in the Valley are not leaving any stone unturned to persuade the Kashmiri people to participate in the election process in huge numbers. The PDP leaders, including Mufti Mohammad Sayeed, NC leaders like Omar Abdullah, Congress leaders like Azad and Saif-ud-Din Soz, BJP leaders, including national BJP leaders and the PDF leaders like Tarigami, Hakim Yaseen and Ghulam Hassan Mir are all campaigning in the Valley and their campaign is quite intense. They have their areas of influence in Kashmir valley and they would see to it that people come out on the days of polling. Thousands of people are turning up to attention the election rallies and listen to political leaders.
That the people of Kashmir have been for the promotion of democratic processes could be seen from the fact that the voting percentage in the Valley has increased very substantially. In the Panchayat elections, over 75 per cent polling had been records. The voting percentage in the 2002 and 2008 Assembly elections and the 2014 Lok Sabha elections was also impressive. All in all, it can be said that the people of the Valley would boycott Geelani and not the elections.
