Senior Cong leader says party irrelevant, resigns | | | Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 28: Senior All India Congress Committee leader and party candidate from Gurez in the recently concluded assembly elections Faqir Mohammad Khan today announced his resignation from the basic membership of the party. Addressing a press conference here Khan, who lost the assembly election with a close margin of 141 votes, said that the functioning of Congress party and irresponsibility of its leadership has forced him to resign from the basic membership of the party. "I had joined the party to serve the people with best of my capabilities but now it seems that Congress has become irrelevant and its leadership insensitive to the ground situation", he said. Khan said that he was thankful to the people of Gurez who have always stood by him and overwhelmingly cast their votes in his favour in the recently concluded elections. "It was unfortunate that National Conference used all the government machinery to defeat me. The officials, including the BLOs, openly sided with the NC candidate. Despite repeated requests to my party leadership in this regard nothing was done and I finally lost the election by a closest margin", he said adding that Congress has paid its prices across Jammu and Kashmir for its coalition with the National Conference, which is known for political manipulation. "I personally believe that the loss to the Congress in JK was mainly because it became the partner to all the blunders and frauds committed by National Conference", he said adding, "The party is again repeating the same blunder as it has now announced to join hands with the same party even after the election rot". He said that during the previous coalition government none of the Congress minister supported the party workers and leaders at the ground level. "Instead the NC leaders created a reign of terror and loot and Congress paid the prices for nothing", he said. Quoting an example he said that the land acquisition for the mini-hydel power project at Gurez has become a gold mine for some blue eyed persons at the cost of common people. "Some influential people managed to get the compensation even for the state (Shamilat) land and those deserving were ignored", he said. Khan said that he is committed to serve the people and work for the upliftment of far flung areas. "However, I am feeling suffocated in the Congress today and have decided to quit the party for the best interest of the people of Gurez and Jammu and Kashmir", he said. The Congress has now adopted the practices followed by National Conference since decades in Jammu and Kashmir. This, he said, is evident from Rajya Sabha elections and nominations by both the parties to the August House. "The nomination of Gulam Nabi Azad as party candidate for Rajya Sabha elections is the testimony that Congress like NC is confining the political opportunities to particular families and persons ignoring those who give blood to the party at ground level". |
