Formation of stable govt the only 'priority' | PDP's reasonable approach | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Jan 28: At a time when certain irresponsible political players are doing all that they could to create a situation that denies the people of the state a popularly-elected government, the PDP, the single largest party, contrary in collaboration with the BJP is trying its level best to create conditions conducive for the formation of a stable government in Jammu & Kashmir. The PDP today not only confirmed its alliance with the BJP, the second largest party in the state, but also left none in any doubt that the formation of the PDP-BJP coalition government is only a matter of few days. The signals from the BJP also indicate that things are moving in the right direction and that the state would get a popularly elected government anytime from now. The PDP spokesperson Nayeem Akhtar must have shocked the NC and the Congress by saying that for the PDP the office of Chief Minister is not the issue and that its first priority is to see a stable government in place at the earliest so that it could mitigate the hardships of the people. "The formation of stable government is the only priority for the party. This issue (office of Chief Minister) is not our concern. The two parties have been holding informal talks to reach a consensus over government formation in the state," he was quoted as saying. "Anybody who reduces the entire discourse of government formation to who holds the (Chief Minister's) chair is belittling the party (PDP) efforts. For us Chief Minister's chair is not the focus…The PDP is committed to form a government which can deliver. We want a government that delivers on the dreams of people of Jammu & Kashmir, keeping their pains and problems in view so that it meets the challenges thrown up by the fractured verdict," he further said to clear the air and point out the direction the PDP and the BJP have been moving towards. One doesn't know what kind of power-sharing formula the PDP and the BJP are working out, but one does know that they have come very close to each other. The decision of the PDP to field only two candidates for the Rajya Sabha election and leave the remaining two for the BJP only demonstrates that. If this was a politically significant decision, the statement of the PDP that the formation of a stable government and not the office of the Chief Minister was its top priority clears all the doubts about the government formation. It appears both the PDP and the BJP have decided to keep all the contentious issues on the backburner, focus only on matters of governance and lead the state government for three years each. There are also reasons to believe that the leadership of both these parties would be able to justify their alliance and the people would appreciate it taking into consideration the nature of the mandate in Jammu & Kashmir. In Jammu, it was the BJP which swept the polls, in Kashmir, it was the PDP which defeated the NC and the Congress and in Ladakh, it was the Congress which carried the day. |
