China wary about growing Indo-US ties | | | That growing Indo-US relations have caused a bit of discomfort among nations that border India is evident from the way China has described Barack Obama's second visit to India as "superficial" and Russia having pledged by the historical close ties between Moscow and New Delhi.Well Beijing has been so much perturbed by Obama's promise to help India in its growth whether that be nuclear energy or solar or wind energy or in Modi's mission of increasing the level of export from the Indian market that China repeated its oft repeated statement saying that Pakistan is China's durable and all weather friend. Not only this.China assured Pakistan of added military and non-military aid thereby conveying to Barack Obama that in case he tried to befriend New Delhi China continued to bank on Islamabad's friendship. That China described Barack Obama's current visit as "superficial rapprochement "indicates that Beijing is disturbed over the way Washington was helping New Delhi in realising Modi's dream of "Make in India" which could affect the Chinese export potential. Hitherto, products from China have flooded markets all over the world because they are cheaper than goods or items manufactured in other countries. It is something else that the Chinese products and goods lack quality and they have a short life but people love to buy them because they are cheaper than other items marketed by different countries. There is every possibility for India to outstrip China as far the annual growth rate is concerned. And once the growth in the sectors of industry, agriculture, horticulture, health and education was recorded it could make India a power superior to China. Moscow is worried because it has apprehensions that India may opt for a durable friendship with the USA which could lead to a situation in which New Delhi may not solely bank on imports of defence equipment from Russia. It is in this context that Moscow has stated that India and Russia remained a strategic partner. In view of the growing strategic partnership between Washington and New Delhi, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov said on Monday that Russia and India remained strategic partners and no external influence could affect them."Our relations with India have an independent value. Indian Deputy Foreign Minister Sujata Singh said Moscow remained a strategic partner for New Delhi. Ambassador Raghavan confirmed the same. I'd add that we are not only strategic partners but also close friends," Morgulov saidUS President Barack Obama is on a three-day state visit to India beginning Sunday and was the chief guest at India's 66th Republic Day celebrations on Monday.India and the US on Sunday announced the much-anticipated breakthrough in the agreement on commercial implementation of their landmark civil nuclear deal, six years after it was signed, and also entered a new strategic phase of co-production in some defence projects. In the field of defence, the two sides renewed the 10-year Defence Framework Agreement and the Defence Trade and Technology Initiative (DTTI). The new framework is to enhance the bilateral defence partnership with more intensive joint military exercises and maritime security efforts among others. Both sides are also to form a working group to explore technology for aircraft carriers and share the design of jet engine technology. Indications are that Beijing may move an extra mile in keeping Pakistan in good humour.Well there is no guarantee that Pakistan may find itself isolated once New Delhi and Washington move closer.Well Washington may not like to lose Pakistan because if Washington distances itself from Islamabad Pakistan may move closer to China.Pakistan has no other alternative but to keep both Beijing and Washington in good humour because the establishment in Islamabad believes that continued military and non-military aid from China and the US alone could help Pakistan in its survival as a nation and enable it to measure swords with India. It is something if Prime Minister, Nawaz Sharif, has reiterated his commitment on promoting friendly ties with India in the interest of peace and stability of the two countries. This is the content of his Republic Day greetings to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Hence one should not read any major change in Islamabad's policy in this greetings.Since Russia's economic and military prowess has emaciated after the split in the Soviet union and China and Pakistan nursing extra-territorial ambitions it is in the interests of India to get closer to the USA.Doing so could ensure India's march on the path of progress and political stability. |
