Anantnag, Jan 31: Residents of several villages, falling under the catchment areas of 'Receiving Station Khiram' in South Kashmir's Anantnag district continue to face 14-hour long power cuts due to a major technical failure in the receiving station.
Informed sources told Early Times that after months now, department hasn't yet turned up to rectify the technical failure despite repeated requests from the public and public representatives.
They said that Receiving Station Khiram having capacity of 2*6.12 MVA due to technical failure is not in a position to provide electricity to a few villages falling under it as per the load curtailment program announced by the department for the winter.
Residents of the villages including Khiram, Sirhama, Mehind, Srigufwara and Shaligam are irked due to these unscheduled power cuts that extend to more than 14 hours each day.
Upset over the unscheduled power cuts and faulty electric supply, residents of Khiram village had locked down the Receiving Station Khiram falling which the senior officials visited the station and assured swift action.
"A week ago, as mark of protest we locked down the receiving station as we are the worst sufferers of the unofficial and unscheduled power cuts in whole Kashmir region. On the same day the officials who visited the station informed us that they will join the two transformers to overcome with the problem of overloading." Manzoor Ahmad, a resident said.
However, he said that after it department announced a fresh curtailment program under which they kept us in dark for more than 14 hours on each day.
Locals said that they were paying the hiked power tariff but never get electricity as per the schedule. "For past one week, power is playing hide and seek and often goes off for hours together," he said.
Another local resident Irshad Ahmad said, "The power cut continued from Friday night till Saturday evening. I kept calling the numbers of the officials and employees for complaint, but did not get any response."
Confirming a technical failure in the Receiving Station Khiram, a senior official of the department whishing not be named revealed that after coupling the transformer CT's of the power panels needs to be upgraded.
"It is seems that the engineer who coupled the two transformers is without brain, if he wants to overcome with the problem of overloading he should upgrade the related machinery first."
Officer who is also an engineer said.
Junior Engineer of the department, Shahid Nisar when contacted defended his senior officials and said, "People forced us to couple the transformers otherwise there is no technical failure. Currently the areas under receiving station are facing a 50% curtailment. So far uninterrupted power supply field agency has to ensure fewer loads from the feeders." Adding up gradation is also an option.
Senior officials of the department were not available for a comment.
