Omar prefers losers over loyalists | | | Arun Singh
Early Times Report
Jammu, Jan 31: Not learning a lesson from its disastrous defeat in assembly election and declining graph of its popularity in the state, National Conference (NC) working president Omar Abdullah took another step by nominating his two lieutenants and former ministers, for Rajya Sabha (RS) elections for four seats, who remained in controversies in the previous government. Moreover these two loyalists of the Omar Abdullah lost miserably in assembly elections. Sources in the party told Early Times that the nominations of two former Ministers of State for Home Sajjad Ahmad Kitchloo and Nasir Aslam Wani as its candidates for the two seats is giving uneasy churns to many leaders in the party who were hoping to be nominated for Upper House on basis of their selfless work for party for the past many decades. They alleged that National Conference was already passing through its worst phase ever with the humiliating defeat in recently held assembly elections in which party stood in third place with scanty 15 seats out of 87 seats. Despite knowing the fact that the verdict was against the party, instead of taking damage control measures, decision for the nominations of these two controversial leaders had raised many fingers, they alleged. Nasir Aslam Wani who is considered to be the close aide of Omar Abdullah was in news for his alleged involvement in Haji Mohammad Yousuf death case at the Chief Minister's residential office on September 29, 2011 and several opposition parties leveled allegations of "custodial killing" against the Chief Minister and other confidants who were present on the occasion, including Wani. But Omar Abdullah managed to get clean chit for himself and his aides in the Haji Mohammad Yousuf death case when retired judge of the Supreme Court, H S Bedi, submitted the report of a one-man commission of inquiry to the State government. Sajjad Ahmad Kichloo who brought disgrace to the party in Kishtwar riots that took place in 2013 for his alleged involvement had to quit as minister of State after a momentary political pressure worked against him for inciting Kishtwar communal violence. In a hurried manner, through a one man commission formed to probe the incident, he was re-inducted into the Omar Abdullah ministry again, a day after a judicial commission gave him the clean chit. |
