Sewage trench excavated in river Lidder
Fisheries Department, police takes cognizance of ET report

ANANTNAG, Feb 6: A day after Early Times reported that an influential hotelier had dug a sewage trench in Lidder river at Movera Pahalgam, the Fisheries department and police took cognizance of the report and vowed to dismantle the trench.
However, the Irrigation and Flood control (IFC) department hasn't yet taken any action against the violator despite informed by the Early Times three days ago.
Assistant Director Fisheries, Mohammad Sadiq Baba told Early Times, "I am thankful to you for exposing this unlawful activity being carried out in the river which could badly affect the precious aquatic life in this famous river. Let me assure that tomorrow in the morning I will myself visit the river and dismantle it."
He also assured action against the employees of the department due to whose negligence the influential hotelier excavated the sewage trench in the river. "It seems that the hotelier has brought my employees into confidence and then evacuated the trench as the distance between the residential hut of our department and sewage trench is only few yards." He added.
Meanwhile, Aishmuqam police has also taken cognizance of the report. "I have also sent a team to the particular location for verifying the matter." SDPO Aishmuqam, Tanveer Hussain said , adding action under law will be taken against those involved in this unlawful activity.
However, Flood Control and Irrigation department has not taken any action against the hotelier. Sources said that so far none of the official from the department visited the location.
Pertinently, maximum portion of Anantnag district get drinking water river Lidder. Environmentalists have already voiced their apprehensions. "Authorities must stop these kinds of activities which will directly harm the aquatic life in the river." Mushtaq Phalgami, noted activist told Early Times.
