End of political road for BJP's Ashok Khajuria? | | | Early Times Report JAMMU, Feb 6: Bhartiya Janta Party former MLA senior national executive Ashok Khajuria who was denied ticket in the assembly elections held recently is unlikely to be considered for MLC also. As per the party sources, serious allegations leveled against him by the then chief minister Omar Abdullah of "bartering" away the interests of the Jammu region for its "personal gains" followed by his diminishing popularity in the state unit of Swayamsevak Sangh has added to his woes which, the national high command has taken seriously. "BJP does not want to take chance to compromise on certain issues which may send wrong signals to the people of state, particularly to Jammu. Despite him being a two time winner of Jammu East assembly, he was denied ticket to whereas his compatriot in Sukhnandan and Sham Chaudhary got the party mandate. This is obvious indication for him for not be considered anymore," said the party sources. In March, 15 seats of MLC are to fall vacant, the contest for which is very likely to be held in the same month. In council, there are 34 members. Seven nominated MLCs including the chairman and deputy chairman's tenure is ending in March. Besides, six other MLCs too would also complete their tenure in the same month. Those who would be retiring include 8 from National Conference, 5 from Congress and one each of PDP and Panthers party. PDP and BJP, which have already reached an understanding in the RS election, are likely to contest them in an alliance and the nominated members would also be sending in the consultation. It will be for the first time that BJP, which has won 25 seats-, will have its MLC. There are certain past references about Khajuria which the party had taken of serious nature which has dwarfed his position in the cadre, foremost being his alleged clash with the local unit of Swayamsevak sangh which the latter has taken in bad taste. Also his name figuring in the then chief minister Omar Abdullah's statement that he and his cadre were frequent visitor to the NC-Cong combine in erstwhile government seeking illicit favors too have brought him bad name. "Ashok Khajuria's name was dropped from consideration even before the party announced its mission for Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections and a call was firmly taken not to include him in any process to cleanse the image of the party. Though he is trying desperately to manage a position in the forthcoming coalition and pressing hard for the MLCship, he may not get the chance," said a senior BJP leader wishing not to be named. It is pertinent to mention that BJP national high command under the leadership of Amit Shah has passed strict instruction to the state cadre not to divulge anything in public domain over the process initiated for government formation in the state. On June 16, 2014 the then chief minister Omar Abdullah had accused the BJP of "bartering" away the interests of the Jammu region for its "personal gains". Without naming anyone, the CM said, "One of their leaders is known for his flattering around Farooq Abdullah. They (BJP leaders) usually land in the offices of ministers for seeking personal favours and in public they try to project themselves as being most concerned about of the sufferings of masses in Jammu". Referring indirectly towards MLA Ashok Khajuria, the CM had said, "Yeh chamchagiri kartay hain and stage such dramas before media in order to seek attention of people". Such like references in the past about Khajuria had made the party to roll heads seriously and take firm decision, the sources divulge. |
