Srinagar, Feb 6: As the speculations about two independents, Hakim Mohammad Yasin and Er Rashid, may stay away from the Rajya Sabha polls, spread in the political circles today, the Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee chief Prof Saifuddin Soz put up a brave face and exuded hope that former union minister and leader of the opposition in the upper house Ghulam Nabi Azad would win the RS seat from JK.
Talking to Early times Soz said, "We are sure about Azad sahib's victory. We have got the requisite numbers and I am hopeful that the two independents (Hakim Mohammad Yaseen and Er Rashid) you are talking about would also vote for Azad sahib."
Soz dispelled the notion that Congress leaders were divided over joining hands with National Conference for ensuring Azad's win in the Rajya Sabha polls. "To seek NC's support was a unanimous decision and all the Congress leaders were in favour of it."
The JKPCC chief said that some people are spreading baseless rumours to create confusion among the ranks and files of the Congress party.
"We are firm on our stand and rumours about state Congress being a divided house are baseless. Our party has become a force to reckon with in all the three regions of the state," he added.
In a related development Congress and National Conference leaders met independent MLA Er Rashid on Friday to persuade him to vote for the alliance candidate Ghulam Nabi Azad.
Sources said that several leaders of NC-Congress met Rashid and tried to persuade him to vote for Azad. "However, Rashid asked them to clarify several points related to the hanging of Parliament attack convict Mohammad Afzal Guru. He didn't make any commitment and has kept his options open whether to vote or to abstain," sources added.
Like Er Rashid, MLA Khan sahib Hakim Mohammad Yasin too has kept his options open and has remained non-committal about whom he would support. Votes of both these leaders are crucial for Azad, if they stay away from the RS polls it would be an end of road for the Congress stalwart.
