IFC deptt allows illegal sand extraction in Jhelum

anantnag, Feb 6: Throwing norms to winds, Irrigation and Flood Control department has allotted a contract to a blue-eyed contractor without going through the tendering process. Official sources said that the influential contractor was picked up by a top official of the department who has close connection with him. They said that the department skipped the tendering process, mandatory according to the prescribed norms and allotted the contract of widening of Jhelum in Bijbehara town to the contractor. However the contractor in nexus with the IFC officials under the garb of widening and dragging, extracted sand worth lakhs from the river bed illegally and sold out it in open market besides dumping at undisclosed location in the Bijbehara's adjacent areas.
Sources said that contractor was doing sand extraction in night hours by using heavy machinery but in the day was carrying out widening of the river by de-silting the river bank.
However, an employee of Fisheries department informed his higher-ups fallowing which Assistant Director wrote a letter to Deputy Commissioner Anantnag and voiced his apprehensions. "The moment my employees informed I formally wrote down to Deputy Commissioner and informed him that the sand extraction on a large scale by the private contractor has posed a threat to the aquatic life in the river." Assistant Director Fisheries Anantnag, Mohammad Sadiq Baba told Early Times.
Accepting that the contract was given to contractor without going through tendering process, a senior official blamed contractors. "We don't have dearth of contractors here, however among 500 contractors no one turned to get this work. So due to poor response of contractors tendering process of skipped." He said.
Meanwhile, Early Times learnt from the reliable sources that Deputy Commissioner Anantnag Syed Tasaduq Geelani has ordered a probe into the illegal sand extraction. Deputy Commissioner has constituted a committee involving IFC, Fisheries and revenue department and have directed them to file a report within a week.
