------ CM from JAMMU ------ | Now, call for unity in Kashmir against JPUF | | Rustam Early Times Report
JAMMU, Feb 13: The formation of Jammu Pradesh United Front (JPUF) in Jammu in the wake of the opposition in Kashmir to the demand in Jammu for Chief Minister’s post has not gone down well with the people of Kashmir. The JPUF was formed on January 9and it consists of 15 political groups, including the Panthers Party, which was decimated by the people of Jammu province in the just-held Assembly elections in the state. It was formed to achieve four objectives – Chief Minister from Jammu, abrogation of article 370, end of dynastic rule and bring the refugees from West Pakistan at par with the people of the state. As said, the formation of the JPUF has not been appreciated by many in Kashmir on the ground that its demands, if accepted, would lead to the division of the state. However, some of them have acknowledged that some of the grievances of the people of Jammu province are genuine and it would be desirable if the authorities appoint a commission to look into their complaints and suggest measures which could satisfy the aggrieved people of Jammu Pradesh subject to the condition that the unity of the state shall be maintained. “The leaders of the Jammu must be having some genuine grievances against the previous governments regarding discrimination against Jammu region but that does not mean that they will encourage the divisive forces at the cost of the unity of the state. Even some leaders of Jammu who were the part of NC and INC coalition government are also raising similar slogans. There is a need for constitution of an independent commission under the chairmanship of a retired Judge of the apex court to look into the grievances of the Jammu people, if any, for the period since 1990,” they have said. It is perhaps for the first time that some Kashmiris, who want J&K to remain as one single political unit, have not rejected the view in Jammu that the people of this province have not been treated fairly by the powers-that-be in the state. These Kashmiri intellectuals/commentators have not only suggested the constitution of an independent commission to look into the complaints of the people of Jammu province and opposed the demand in Jammu for Chief Minister from this region, but have also lambasted the Jammu-based NC leader, who only recently suggested that there was the need to set up three autonomous regional councils, one each for Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh, as also sub-regional councils, so that the inter-regional tensions were eased and the unity and integrity of the state maintained. Their arguments read like these: “The development of all the regions lies in keeping the state integrated as one unit. There is, therefore, no need of changing the demographic and geographical character of the state by creating regional and sub regional councils and raising divisive slogans. There is every apprehension that present situation created by the inordinate delay in formation of the government can lead to the similar situation as we had experienced in the year 2008 which may prove detrimental for the development and security of the state…The people of the valley and Jammu are mostly interdependent. Kashmir being land locked area has to depend on the up keep of NHW which is the only and important communication link connecting Jammu. Similarly, the people of Kashmir with high purchasing power provide the best consumer market for Jammu traders”. One thing is clear from what the critics of the JPUF and the Jammu-based NC leadership: They have acknowledged that times have changed and that something has to be done to convince the people of Jammu Pradesh that their voice will be heard and that the old policies will not work any longer. The very fact that Kashmiri intellectuals/commentators have taken note of the emergence of the JPUF clearly indicates that Jammu province has emerged as a great political force after the 2014 Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. This precisely was what the people of Jammu Pradesh wanted. |
