Amid restrictions, clashes continue in Kupwara | Several cops among injured | | S.Tahir-Ul Haq

KUPWARA, Feb 13: Clashes between government forces and protesters continued for the third consecutive day on Friday, in Kupwara district of North Kashmir, where restrictions were imposed under section 144, to prevent clashes and protests over the mysterious death of a local man. The clashes left scores including some police men injured. According to reports, the authorities on Friday imposed strict restrictions in Kupwara town and its adjoining areas to prevent clashes and protests over the mysterious death of a local man, allegedly in police custody. People were informed through public address system about the imposition of Section 144 and they were advised to stay indoors, however all roads leading to the district head quarter were closed, sources informed. Reports said heavy contingent of police and paramilitary CRPF personnel have been deployed in Kupwara on Friday to prevent clashes and protests after Friday Congregational prayers, over the mysterious death of a local man. Local resident of Kupwara town told Early Times that they were not being allowed to move out freely on Friday. However, groups of youth from different areas took to streets in main town Kupwara and staged protest demonstration, and anti government slogans at Cement Bridge, Zirham and Awoora. The mysterious death of murder accused, Nazir Ahmad Mughal 33, S/O Abdul Rehman, an adopted son of Bahadur Khan R/O Gujjar Patti, Zirhama sparked violent protests in Kupwara town and its adjacent areas. A group of people alleged that Nazir died in police custody and are demanding thorough impartial probe into the murder. Official sources told Early Times that, the restrictions under Section 144 were put in place on Friday to maintain law and order. Even though we didn't allow any vehicle to move to the district head quarter as they were causing trouble to the people. However a senior government official said that, "police has registered a case under First Information Report (FIR) 41/2015 US 223 and 224, investigations are going on, and there will be a thorough probe into the death of the deceased. Meanwhile, extraordinary efforts were made by police at Palhallan village of Baramulla district in North Kashmir on Fridayto enable peace to prevail in the area. However terming the efforts of the policemen as noteworthy, The District Magistrate, Talat Pervez praised the efforts, however Deputy Commissioner expressed shock over the fact that many policemen were injured during the stone pelting at Palhallan. |
