CCTVs farfetched, its electricity that matters | "What fun to install CCTVs when Jammu has no uninterrupted power supply" | | K Koushal Early Times Report Jammu, Feb 13: While there is a pressing need for keeping a strict and clinical surveillance on the city's major installations as well as the prominent places in Jammu's growing concern over the crime rate and frequent accidents, the vital Close Circuit Television Cameras (CCTVs), though installed, are of lesser use. The 24x7 electricity needed to run the show is erratic which leaves the significance of these cameras inconsequential as any crime committed at a place at a particular time when power has gone can leave the police clueless. Also as the entire city which recently was brought under the ambit of lights signal to control traffic have gone defunct and almost redundant, what use could be of the CCTVs in the absence of power in the city, "The electricity cuts are huge and erratic. Some times it's gone missing for days together. Such situations give easy access to the criminals to act fast and do away. If such acts are not caught in cameras, then what is the use of installing a project worth cores," said Ram Krishan Abrol, a cloth merchant at Raghunath Pura, a hub of tourists and commoners of the Jammu city. A senior officer of the Power Development Department laughed away the query over probability of reformation of power in Jammu city saying that the issue is most complicated and has been hanging fire since ages. "Regular power supply in Jammu and Kashmir would remain a farfetched dream until some unpredicted does not happens. The system would remain in vogue without any change," he said requesting anonymity. However to be on the safer side regarding the installation of CCTVs in Jammu city at the vulnerable places, the senior superintendent of Police Control Room Ashok Sharma said that except two CCTV cameras being non-functional, all other 58 are in good working condition and the department is assuring that they work without any hindrance. " We are on the fast track to make the CCTV cameras workable round the clock so that system works properly . Everything is being maintained as per the requirement and the system s working perfectly," said SSP PCR adding that the two non-functional cameras at Bakshinagar and Janipur are being taken care of and sooner the fault would be rectified. It is pertinent to mention here that to cover the entire Jammu's vulnerable spots the administration needs nearly 100 CCTV cameras to be installed , but due to shortage of the same and non-availability of funds to install the remaining ones, the city had to be content with 60 only. However the major impediment to the proper functioning of the system is that until the electricity at 24x7 is not available; the usage of these cameras would be insignificant. Close-circuit television cameras (CCTV), spy cameras and beam sensors are not now only the domain of security forces or intelligence agencies but many private establishments including hotels, jewelry stores and electronic shops and even houses of some high profile personalities are showing interest to buy them. Is state administration bearing the colossal loss due to negligence or for personal gains is the million dollars question, unanswered yet. |
