Vohra likely to be replaced after formation of PDP-BJP Government | | | Shakeel A Khan
Early Times Report SRINAGAR, Feb 13: At a time when Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) are close to forming the government in the state there are chances that Governor N N Vohra may be replaced and the search has already started. The appointment of the new constitutional head for the state will be another absorbing affair. There are many ex-diplomats who are vying for the top post. Some reports suggest that Lieutenant General Syed Atta Hasnain is the strong contender. Vohra's term was extended in 2013. As per reports soon after PDP-BJP form the coalition government in the state, the centre may go for the appointment of the new Governor because Vohra, whose term had ended in 2013 is serving the in the capacity of the constitutional head of the state merely on extension basis. It may be mentioned here that Vohra became the 12th governor of the state after the term of the retired General S K Sinha expired on June 25, 2008. The term of the serving governor was given extension by the UPA government as a regard for his excellent services. The process of appointing the governors in the state of Jammu and Kashmir started when the last president of the state Dr. Karan Singh was appointed as the first Governor. The other personalities who served in the capacity of the Governors of the state are J.N. Wazir, Baghwan Sahai, L.K. Jha, B.K. Nehru, Jagmohan (two times), Retired General K.V. Krishna Rao, G C Saxena (two times), retired General S.K. Sinha. Of these, Jagmohan, as the two times Governor of the state has been the most controversial governor of the state particularly during his second term when the militancy broke out in the Kashmir valley, while some hold him responsible for the mass exodus of the Kashmiri Pandits. Though the appointment of the Governor is a constitutional requirement, but the appointment of the 13th governor will be an interesting issue as the state will be ruled by jointly by the 'secularists' and the 'hardliners' for the next six years. "It will be another test to the relationship between the PDP and the BJP since these two parties have decided to forge an alliance for the coming six years. Whether the next governor will be of the secular or hardliner is to be seen since the role of the governor is very crucial in running the affairs of the state," said Prof Saif-ud-din. |
