Patients at receiving end as specialists 'missing' in valley hospitals | | | Mudasir Tariq SRINAGAR, Feb 13: How the Kashmir valley is lagging behind on the health front can be gauged by the fact that several government run hospitals in the city have an absolute dearth of senior doctors, while thousands of patients rushing to these hospitals are at the receiving end. Sources told Early Times that most of the hospitals including the SHMS hospital and valley's lone maternity hospital Lalded have no senior doctors for Anesthesia, surgery and post-operative care. In absence of senior doctors patients have been left at the mercy of inexperienced doctors most of whom are still studying that has proven to be fatal resulting in an immense loss of life. "In absence of senior medicos for critical patients that mostly require surgeries, the death rate in these hospitals has increased by 25 percent," said an official of the health department wishing anonymity. Senior medicos, who would usually administer cases at the operation theatre, have been replaced by their juniors. This is despite the fact that callous approach of letting the junior doctors handle the cases could prove detrimental for the life of patients. "They are playing with the lives of innocents; this is a grave issue that most of the city hospitals are going through right now,' added the official. He said that even during the night hours only the junior staff is placed in these hospitals who can't handle critical cases, thus further deteriorating the situation. "They are compromising with the lives of innocents at the hands of inexperienced doctors," said Ali Mohammad, an attendant at SMHS hospital. While dozens of surgeries are performed at SMHS hospital on daily basis, surprisingly there is not even a single post-operative ward there that could look after the patients post-surgery. Official sources said medicos, who look after critical patients after surgery find it hard to manage the patients in absence of close monitoring and post-operative care unit. They said that most of these senior doctors are skipping duties by using political approach. They even manage to draw huge salaries without attending their duties. "Many of these doctors have gone outside the valley to avoid jaw biting cold while as several others are running their private clinics thus avoiding their duties. No one speaks against them fearing repercussions as they enjoy good contacts," said sources. |
