Seals 28 illegally constructed hotels, influential left out | PDA's selective drive! | | Saahil Suhail

Anantnag, Feb 13: Pursuing the High Court directive, Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA) on Friday sealed 28 illegally raised huts and hotels in Movera area of Pahalgam. Among the sealed huts and hotels one belongs to retired influential police officer who started constructing the structure in year 2013 after the HC took cognizance of a Public Interest litigation (PIL). Official's sources said that Deputy Commissioner Anantnag Tasduq Geelani had constituted a seven member committee for identifying the illegal construction/structures in Movera and other areas of Pahalgam. They said that Assistant Commissioner Anantnag (ACR) was heading the committee which identified over 87 illegal constructions in Movera. Officials sources said that notices were served to all eighty-seven violators, however some of them provided documents and proved that they have raised the structures before the area was brought under PIL. They added that nine violators including Tariq Ahmad Teng Son-in-Law of former health minister and senior Congress leader Taj Mohi-u-din and Mohammad Altaf Butto, son-in-law of former Rural Development Minister Ali Mohammad Sagar have approached court and have stayed the demolishing decision of Pahalgam Development Authority. Complying with the orders of High Court, this morning a squad of Pahalgam development authority headed by its Chief executive officer Mohammad Yousf Bhat accompanied by SDPO Pahalgam Tanveer Hussian and officials of several other departments sealed 28 structures raised inviolation of COBA Act-1988 under section 08. Retried SSP Mustaq Ahmad Kanu hotel located near white water raftingpoint is among the sealed. Early Times had published several reportsagainst this particular violation in September 2013 when southern part of Kashmir valley was witnessing unrest. However locals accused Pahalgam Development authority of exempting theinfluential violators. "Although we welcome this drive but at the same time we question the authorities that how they exempted the rich and influential," Nisar Hussain Shah, a village head told Early Times. He said that authorities must demolish all the structures constructed illegally and should implement all the laws. "it is the height of corruption that when these constructions were taken place authorities acted as mute spectators but now they are taking action and befooling the poor," he added. CEO, PDA Mohammad Yousf also questioned the role of Revenue and IFCdepartment who allowed the constructions before the area was brought under Pahalgam Development Authority. "It is completely negligence of Revenue and IFC department who allowed these constructions, however now when the area is under PDA no such construction will be allowed." CEO said, adding if Irrigration and Flood control department failed to demolish the structures, PDA will ensure demolition of these illegal structures which pose a threat to river Lidder and sensitive environment of the area. When asked why PDA has exempted few influential violators, he said, "I don't any role in it, the committee which ACR Anantnag was heading, has identified the structures which we sealed today."
