Heavy snowfall in Kashmir, mercury dips to sub-zero again | | | Early Times Report
Srinagar, Mar 9 : Entire Kashmir valley, including summer capital Srinagar, turned white after heavy snow fall of the season, resulting in considerable drop in the temperature. However, from this afternoon the weather will remain dry till the next four days, a Met department spokesperson said here, but the mercury will remain below normal, resulting in chill. The entire Kashmir valley was under a white carpet as people woke up this morning following heavy snowfall of the season during the past 24 hours resulting in dip in the mercury at sub-zero in most of the places, including Srinagar. The spokesperson said the weather will remain mainly dry during the next 24 hours. During the subsequent four days,the weather will remain dry, he predicted, much to the delight of people, particularly students of class 10 and 12who have to appear in the examinations. Life was badly affected in the valley due to heavy snowfall which had disrupted power supply, snapped road links and water supply in many areas. Srinagar the summer capital of the state recorded one-and-half a feet of fresh snowfall resulting in drop in the mercury. The minimum dropped and settled at minus 0.3 degree Celsius, three notches below normal while the maximum temperature yesterday was 3.4 degree, ten notches below normal. Tree, roof tops besides roads and open fields were covered under a blanket of snow in the city. However, people have a sigh of relief from the cold as sun came out as people woke up this morning. The spokesperson said the sky would be partly cloudy tomorrow and the maximum and minimum temperatures would be around 6 degree and one degree respectively, which are below normal. The world famous ski resort of Gulmarg in north Kashmir also received about one feet of fresh snowfall during thepast 24 hours resulting in drop in the minimum temperature from minus 4.9 degree recorded yesterday to minus 7 degree, three notches below normal. However, the fresh snowfall and drop in the temperatures seen good as more than five feet of white powder on theslopes will last till April which could attract more tourists and adventure lovers besides skiers from all over the globe. One to two feet of fresh snowfall was also received in north Kashmir, including Machil, Keran, Karnah, Razdan and Sadhna passes, Tangdhar, Gurez, Neeru and other area, including those near the Line of Control (LoC). A number of roads, connecting far flung and remote villages in north Kashmir, were disconnected with the irrespective district and tehsil headquarters due to fresh snowfall. However, the plains, including Kupwara, receive dlight snowfall of few inches. |
