KUPWARA, Mar 9: Moderate to heavy snowfall hit normal life in north Kashmir which threw life out of gear. Due to snowfall the roads were closed between Karnah, Keran and Tangdhar to Kupwara town. Power supply to most of the rural areas in Kupwara district remained affected today. According to sources, recent snowfall has thrown life out of gear, while as power supply to many areas of Kupwara district also remained affected from last couple of days. Mohammad Rafiq of Tangdhar told Early Times that at least three to four feet snow had accumulated on the Tangdhar-Kupwara road near high altitude at Sadhna Top. There are many far flung areas without power supply from last few days. Scores of far lung areas including Sadna, Ceemari, Amoori, Chtgarhi, Satparora, Prada, Tadd, Teethwal and Dringla, and other adjoining areas of Kupwara district are without electricity supply from last few days, said Rafiq. Rafiq added and said that there are many passengers of these border areas including women who had to leave for Tangdhar, Keran and Karnah, remained stranded in Kupwara town and in its adjacent areas due to closure of road. People are eagerly waiting for the roads to open, so that they will not suffer more. Even though we had not communicated with our parents from past four days, he informed. Another local resident of Teethwal Shabir Ahmad Gujjar said that the previous coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir has always ignored the far flung areas, which continue to suffer in absence of basic amenities of life. There was always a mother steeply approach with the common masses of far flung areas like Keran, Karnah and Tangdhar. "People have been deprived of the communication facilities. The landlines telephony is almost defunct while as the government should have allowed the private mobile companies to provide mobile phone services in our areas, so that we will not suffer a lot in future, said Shabir. However a senior official of the Power Development Department (PDD) Kupwara told Early Times that, "The power supply has been restored to normal in almost all major towns of the district. We are working hard to restore it in upper reaches but the restoration may take some more time as electric poles at some places have got uprooted due to heavy snowfall.
Electricity supply in Kupwara town and other adjoining areas was restored today evening. It may take time to restore the supply in far flung and remote areas of Kupwara district. Our men are in the field to assess the extent of the damage and will fix it by tomorrow," official said.
