Jammu-Srinagar NH remains closed since Mar 2
3/10/2015 12:36:41 AM
Srinagar, Mar 9 : The national highway, the only road linking the Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, remained closed since March 2, barring once when only one-way traffic was allowed on March 7. Hundreds of trucks and oil tankers are stranded at different places on the highway as authorities did not allow any heavy vehicle to ply on the highway. No vehicle was allowed from Srinagar or Jammu for the second day today as the highway remained closed due to landslides between Ramban and Ramsu and heavy snowfall on both sides of the Jawahar tunnel and Patnitop, a traffic police official said. He said all passenger vehicles, which had left Jammu early in the morning on March 7 reached Kashmir valley the same evening. There is no passenger vehicle stranded at any place on the highway, he said. However, a large number of Jammu bound vehicles, including empty trucks and oil tankers are stranded on this side of the tunnel for the past more than a week. The highway was closed on March 2 following landslides in Udhampur area where a portion of hill collapsed. There were landslides in Ramban and Ramsu area. However, after the Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintenance of the highway, cleared the landslides, traffic was allowed to ply from Jammu to Srinagar on March 6. More than 3000 vehicles, mostly carrying passengers got stranded at different places following fresh landslides in Ramsuarea. Later, the stranded vehicles were cleared and fresh vehicles were allowed from Jammu to Srinagar on March 7. But again the highway was closed yesterday due to fresh landslides and heavy snowfall. The BRO has already pressed into service sophisticated machines and men to work to put through the highway. Traffic police official said traffic from Srinagar to Jammu will be allowed once a green signal is received from the BRO and traffic police personnel deployed at different places on the highway.
