Rising water level causes concern among Sopore residents | | | S Tahir-Ul Haq
Early Times Report BARAMULLA, Apr 4: Though the rain has stopped across the Kashmir valley the water level in river Jhelum is still a cause of worry for the common masses of Sheer Colony here and other adjacent areas of Sopore town in this North Kashmir district. Mohammad Ashraf, a resident of Sheer Colony told Early Times, "the water level is still three feet below the danger level, but it has registered a steady increase over the past several hours and has submerged hundreds of households of Sheer colony." Ashraf said that water has almost started to recede in river Jhelum, but is slowly increasing in many parts of Sopore town, especially in the low lying areas like Sheer Colony, Mahrajpora, and other parts of Baramulla district in North Kashmir. He said that water level in increasing in river Jhelum in Baramulla district which is a worrisome for many areas who are residing on the river banks. The water has inundated many low-lying areas of the town. At Sheer Colony and Mahrajpora in Sopore town, water from the river Jhelum has entered a large number of houses forcing people to shift to safer places, especially in the nearby hospitals and Panchayat ghars. The local residents of an area said that the people are facing immense hardships and the authorities have failed to mitigate their sufferings. Incessant rain for the past couple of days has led to water logging across the valley. Water has entered into many houses which are completely unsafe now. The rains have exposed the weakness and callous attitude of the government, said locals. The most affected inundated areas are Sheer colony, Mahrajpora, Tarazoo, Krankshivn, Tulibal and other adjoining localities. They further added and said that due to poor drainage system in Baramulla district water logging has become a nuisance for them. The locals said that they cannot go outside their villages due to water logging. However, a senior official from Baramulla district told Early Times that they have pressed their men and machinery on job to pump out the rain water from the localities. "We are on job and have dewatered many areas in Sopore town today and are monitoring the situation in Sheer colony after every hour, machinery is also active so there is nothing to worry," the official said. |
