Srinagar, Apr 4: As Srinagar-Jammu National Highway remained closed for vehicular traffic for the fourth consecutive day today due to landslides at various places people suffer in both the regions suffered. Over 600 Kashmir-bound passengers are stranded at the Jammu bus stand for the past three days. They want to be airlifted. Around 700 vehicles also stranded along the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway at places like Udhampur, Banihal, Ramban, Batote and Patnitop areas. With the closure of only surface connectivity between Kashmir and Jammu regions of the state, Kashmir markets sans essential commodities besides diesel and petrol. "The shopkeepers have increased rates of vegetables and fruits as well more than double in last four days, meat is not alsoavailable, government must speed up the process of opening the highway," said a local. Pertinently following the incessant rains and Heavy snowfall, the highway was closed on April 1 due to landslides at several places. However according to authorities' men and machines of Border Roads Organization (BRO) are working to clear the highway. Following continuous road block, People's Democratic Party (PDP) President and Member Parliament, Mehbooba Mufti has sought opening of alternative roads to connect Kashmir with rest of the world. Expressing dismay over the continued closure of Srinagar-Jammu highway, Mehbooba Mufti Saturday impressed upon the BEACON authorities to expedite work to reopen the highway at the earliest. She urged the Union Ministry for Transport and Highways to expedite work on construction of alternate highway to end Kashmir's pestering connectivity problem. She also urged the Government to provide rations and other essentials the people trapped on the highway. Mehbooba also demanded upgradation of other roads connecting Kashmir with Jammu region, including Mughal Road and Kishtwar-Sinthan-Anantnag Road. She said given the miserable condition of the present highway, development of alternate road links to Kashmir has become imperative. |
