BJP giving 'preference' to one caste | Coordination Committee | | Early Times Report Jammau, Apr 4: Resentment is brewing among the people of Jammu region and BJP members and followers over the preferential treatment the party high command has been giving to one particular caste in the government and the party. "Jammu region houses many communities and castes, but the BJP high command under the influence of certain vested interests has been giving preference to one caste over all others" has been the general perception in the region. Very importantly, many party MLAs, are in private expressing the same view and saying "not one but two castes are being given preferential treatment". What has provoked the ignored castes, which constitute majority population in the state, is the nomination of Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh, Rajya Sabha MP Shamsher Singh Manhas and Health and Medical Education Minister Lal Singh to the PDP-BJP Coordination Committee. "How is it that three out of five persons nominated to the Coordination Committee are from one caste? MoS in the PMO Jitendra Singh, who joined the BJP only recently, also belongs to the same caste. Nirmal Singh, Jitendra Singh and Shamsher Singh are also members of the BJP national executive committee. There are reports that MLC Ajat Shatru Singh, who left the National Conference only recently to join the BJP, is also being considered for nomination to the Upper House. "We do not believe in caste system, but a balance has to be maintained to give a sense of belonging to all castes and communities. The party doesn't belong to one caste or one community. We also supported the BJP and voted for it in the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. We never expected that those who lead the BJP would give a raw deal to all but one caste", the critics of those who are handling the party affairs are saying. Two other members of the party who were also nominated to the Coordination Committee are state BJP president Jugal Kishore Sharma and Lok Sabha MP from Ladakh Thupstan Chhewang. Jugal Kishore Sharma had managed Nagrota assembly seat for his brother Nand Kishore Sharma, who lost the election to NC candidate Devendra Singh Rana, brother of MoS in PMO Jitendra Singh. The ignored castes are not only expressing themselves against the irrational decision of the party high command and those who surround it for giving a preferential treatment to one caste. They are also asserting that "all the five members of the Coordination Committee from the BJP are no match to the members of the same committee from the PDP; namely, Mehbooba Mufti (party president and MP), Muzzaffar Hussain Beig (MP and former Deputy Chief Minister), Tariq Hamid Karra (former Finance Minister), Naeem Akhtar (Education Minister and former bureaucrat) and Abdul Rehman Veeri (Cabinet Minister)". They are, in addition, criticizing them for preferring what they term as "tainted persons and rank opportunists and outsiders over the qualified and well deserving candidates" as far as the selection of candidates for the Legislative Council is concerned. "Mehbooba Mufti, Muzzaffar Hussain Beig, Tariq Hamid Karra, Naeem Akhtar and Abdul Rehman Veeri would overshadow the BJP members in the Coordination Committee as they are old hands, well educated and well versed in political and other matters," the critics say, adding that "things are not moving in the right direction for the party". |
